“Bryan understood that enabling pharmacists to use their full clinical skillset, including independent prescribing, was not about professional aspiration alone, but about better, faster care for patients. He played a crucial role in helping shape a model that balanced clinical ambition with deliverability through the pharmacy teams up and down the country. In doing so, he helped lay the foundations for a service that has transformed access to care for patients across Scotland and repositioned community pharmacy as a first point of contact within primary care,” said Matt.

Bryan played an equally significant role during the COVID-19 pandemic. He listened carefully and acted decisively during a period of rapid change and uncertainty that tested every part of the healthcare system. Working closely with Community Pharmacy Scotland, local Health Boards and others, Bryan was able to identify what the community pharmacy network needed, and more importantly, how quickly it needed it. He helped ensure that not only were support and practical solutions put in place wherever possible, that community pharmacy had clarity and was recognised and supported to continue to deliver care to patients in extremely challenging conditions.

Even when Bryan started to experience his own health challenges, his commitment to community pharmacy and his quiet determination remained.

“That strength of character, and that sense of duty, was entirely consistent with the way he lived his professional life,” explained Matt.

“His loss has been felt deeply, not only by his family, friends, and colleagues, but by many across the pharmacy family and the wider health system who had the privilege of working with him. Even I did not fully know his impact across the sectors of the profession. The breadth of tributes shared following his passing speaks volumes about the respect in which he was held and the impact he made. He had a phrase ‘Team Pharmacy’ recognising that it is possible to have strategic alignment between a Government and various bodies to develop and support frontline services, that phrase will stay with me. While Bryan is no longer with us, his legacy most certainly is,” said Matt.

Bryan’s life was one marked by public service integrity and quiet leadership. His outstanding contribution to community pharmacy will live on in the services that were shaped with his input, in the partnerships he helped to foster and by the fact that community pharmacy in Scotland has been strengthened by all he did.

“His work has left the system better than he found it and that is perhaps the highest recognition any public servant can achieve,” said Matt.

"What set Bryan apart was not simply his influence, but how he chose to exercise it. He understood community pharmacy not as an abstract policy lever, but as a vital, accessible part of Scotland’s health system..."
