HOW LIFE CAN BEGIN AT... 50

Several years ago, award-winning community pharmacist, Elizabeth Roddick, underwent a life-changing experience that altered her thinking regarding the ageing process. Here, she tells SP how she’s trying to help others…

After experiencing her own life-changing experience, Elizabeth Roddick realised that many women effectively ‘stop living’ at 50 and accept a reduced quality of life.

‘I firmly believe,’ Elizabeth told SP, ’that many women reach a silent conclusion that, after raising children and/or having successful careers, it’s time to accept a deteriorating quality of life.

‘This is because, as women, we were raised to be accommodating and accepting beyond our comfort and strength levels. To illustrate, the European Commission has found that during the pandemic along, women spent – on average – 62 hours per week caring for children compared to 36 hours for men, and 23 hours per week doing housework (fifteen hours for men).

‘Crucially, this pattern can follow into later years, when females see their doctors about menopausal or chronic symptoms. Many explain their struggles, feelings and worries and, if they have an enlightened doctor, they can get wonderful support. On the other hand, they might not find the answer for which they are looking. Their wellbeing and happiness could be affected and, ultimately, their quality of life.’

Elizabeth decided to help women in this age bracket by developing a system for holistically improving the quality of life of her individual patients and clients. The result is ‘Quality of Life for Women Over 50’, which not only provides lots of information about the ageing process in general, but, more importantly addresses the issues that ultimately come along when women reach the age of 50 and beyond.

‘In the ER Quality Life System I emphasis mind set in some of the chapters because it can make such a difference to the outcome,’ Elizabeth continues.

‘In the Cambridge dictionary, the definition of mind set is ‘a person’s way of thinking and their opinions.’ The best way to describe mind set is by way of example.
