Recently, the Scottish Drug Forum (SDF) launched a survey on staff learning needs on sexual and reproductive health and blood borne viruses. The survey was designed to inform the team’s future work planning and the development of service provision and service capacity.
The results of the survey, to date, have been interesting, to say the least.
With just under 300 respondents to the survey, 48 per cent were from the third sector, 26 per cent were from the NHS and 25 per cent were from local authority.
On the plus side, in terms of the areas in which the sector feels most knowledgeable, the causes and effects of stigma topped the list, with nearly 70 per cent of respondents stating that they felt knowledgeable in this sector, closely followed by creating healthy relationships (60.9 per cent).
The areas in which the sector felt least knowledgeable were with regard to the elimination of Hepatitis C, with only 25.5 per cent stating they felt knowledgeable in this area, followed by the outbreak of HIV (26.6 per cent feeling knowledgeable).
The populations that respondents felt they were most knowledgeable about in terms of their sexual health and BBV were people affected by homelessness, with 45.4 per cent stating they were knowledgeable, followed by vulnerable young people at 32.0 per cent.
‘This survey,’ said team leader, Adrienne Hannah, ‘will form a platform on which we can base a practical approach to ensuring staff have the knowledge and information they need on what can often be seen as a challenging topic.
‘It’s crucial that, as workers often working with vulnerable and marginalised people, we have an awareness of the range of issues that the people we serve may be facing. Unfortunately, sexual and reproductive health and blood borne viruses are seen as ‘difficult’ issues or not ‘core’ to other provision.
