GOOD NEWS ON THE WORKFORCE FRONT

As the contract continues to develop at pace, there’s good news on the education front...

Anne Watson, Postgraduate Pharmacy Dean, NHS Education for Scotland

The Pharmacy Education reforms are the most significant change in my career and have the potential to enable transformation of the pharmacy role in health and social care. We have worked together with Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) and the other UK nations to support the development of the Post- Registration Foundation curriculum. The launch of the single UK curriculum and credentialing will allow easy movement of workforce at this level between the home countries. More importantly, it will provide assurance for the public of the standard of practice for pharmacists in patient focused roles.

I am very proud of my NES team who have worked tirelessly alongside RPS, NHS pharmacy and community pharmacy to make a Post-Registration Foundation programme available in Scotland, including independent prescribing by autumn 2021: the first in the UK. All this done as we also introduce the new Foundation Training Year!

is due to relaunch in autumn 2021. N

The further development of the NES Post- Registration Foundation programme is in line with the UK curriculum developed by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) and will enable pharmacists in Scotland from all three sectors of practice to undertake structured training which includes the independent prescribing qualification, support from NES Senior Educators, and gaining a UK-recognised RPS credential.

The NES Pharmacy Post-Registration programme has been available in hospital and primary care sectors of practice since 2005 and 2017 respectively. In September 2017, community pharmacists took part in a small pilot which has enabled Foundation Pharmacists to develop competence and confidence by completing the framework and developing an online portfolio of evidence.

In September, the NES Post-Registration Foundation programme will relaunch and open registration to all newly-qualified pharmacists employed in community practice, as well as in hospital and primary care. This exciting development is in line with the UK-wide development of the RPS Post Registration Foundation curriculum that will bring UK-wide recognition of completion of the NES training programme.

The programme comprises an Evidence Framework which maps to the RPS curriculum and identifies any additional training to deliver the services in Scotland. Programme support includes an educational programme of webinars and online peer sessions hosted by the NES Pharmacy Senior Educators. The programme promises to facilitate the development of confidence and key skills including leadership and management, education and research behaviours in a supportive environment.

In the first year of the programme, Foundation Pharmacists will start to develop their prescribing capabilities, including clinical skills training. In the second year, they will undertake the formal Independent Prescribing course, which one of the Scottish Schools of Pharmacy will deliver.
