Our most recent YLC event
was held virtually on Sept. 15. We were thrilled to welcome Mr. Rob- ert Madsen as our guest speaker, with an open question and answer presentation that really helped direct the Young Leaders Council with the day-to-day challenges and ponderings of today’s storage industry. It was both informative and amusing to hear him speak of the whole father-to-son transition of his self-storage business.
In his early years in the self-
storage industry as a young boy, his parents owned an open space warehouse type building. It was
“Robby’s” (as he was called in the early years) job to custom build unit spaces on demand. Some plywood, mesh, hardware, a few screws, and boom! If a customer wanted a 5-by-10 unit, that’s what they would have within 24 hours.
Our YLC Conversation with Madsen was so valuable,
we even went an extra hour absorbing all of his knowl- edge and experiences. He spoke about getting involved with staff members to encourage creativity and allow your team to brainstorm new “out-of-the-box” solutions to make your storage “culture” more exciting and pro- ductive. As a second-generation storage industry en- trepreneur, he has gone through years of growth in the industry. He expressed the importance and intention of going for lunch or other out-of-the-office meetings with his father; in this example, it could be a team member or a mentor to get away from the office on a more casu- al level to gather information and keep learning. Thank you, Rob, for taking the time to share so many great stories and fabulous information with the future leader in the wonderful industry of self-storage!
