NEWSMAKERS OF 2023
From challenging government policies and politicians to speaking up for more than 145,000 hard working police officers in England and Wales, here are the top headlines PFEW made during 2023
2023 has been one of the most challenging years in the history of UK policing. It has been a year like no other with rapid and sweeping changes in police regulations, demands on police officers shooting through the roof and the continual Government lethargy in addressing real and valid concerns of police officers. For instance, PFEW was quick to react when politicians decided to question the operational independence of policing,
which is one of the cornerstones of the UK policing foundation. National Chair Steve Hartshorn issued a public statement that it is entirely reasonable that the Home Secretary might raise concerns with senior police leaders in private, it is unacceptable to publicly attempt to tamper with the operational independence of policing. The Police Federation was at the forefront in supporting officers and voicing their concerns. For example, when the
news broke that a court has decided to reveal the identity of the firearms officer involved in a fatal shooting as part of an operation, PFEW reacted immediately and said it was bitterly disappointed and seriously concerned about the potential ramifications of the decision. These are just few of the headlines the
Police Federation made in the course of its ongoing work of ensuring the safety and welfare of officers in England and Wales.
