STRONGER BY ONE MORE YEAR
It has been one of the most challenging years for British policing.
The politicisation of policing, squeeze on finances and the frankly disappointing pay award have done very little to improve morale. It has also been a
challenging year for PFEW for reasons that are well documented. Despite this it is important reflect on the positive things that have happened over the past 12 months. PFEW has continued to support its members in a wide range of ways

PFEW National Chair Steve Hartshorn and Deputy National Chair Tiff Lynch hailed the work of officers and said: “The unity shown by police officers from across the country to represent as one force is exemplary. We are proud of the rank and file who never fail to stand up to protect the people and uphold the law.”
JANUARY In January we released the results of our 2022 Pay and Morale Survey which painted a stark picture showing just how policing rests on a knife edge. PFEW challenged the Government to refute the findings which they could not do.
FEBRUARY After months of hard work, PFEW supported members by releasing a new maternity guide and calculator. The toolkit was designed to offer support to members in all things maternity, offering the latest legal guidance, employer requirements and much more. Feedback on the calculator was resoundingly positive.
MARCH After the findings of the Social Market Foundation’s (SMF) independent research into the state of police pay, PFEW called for minimum 17 per cent pay rise for members. The SMF took into account the erosion of pay over a period of 20 years and echoed our calls for remuneration to reflect the P factor, which is the measurement of the unknown risks officers face every day when

they put their uniforms on. PFEW believes that in order for officers’ pay to be fair, these risks must be calculated and paid over and above the salary. In 2023 PFEW also hosted a series of webinars for special constables. The first took place in March and set a precedent for an engaging series of information packed sessions.
APRIL
PFEW made key progress in the world of officer wellbeing in 2023. In April, recognising the pressure and the trauma members’ experience on a daily basis, we introduced professional development wellbeing sessions for reps. These sessions were designed to further develop the support that our reps can provide to you as members.
MAY On 6 May, officers from across the country came together and joined with the military for King Charles III’s Coronation, code- named Operation Golden Orb, to deliver one of the largest and most complex security and public order measures British
JUNE June started with Volunteers’ Week and we highlighted the fantastic work of special constables, police support volunteers and volunteer police cadets. Volunteering in our police force can be traced back to 1831 when the first special constables were introduced by the Special Constables Act. Special constables are fully warranted officers who support all major policing operations in the same way as full-time officers. However, special constables are not the only ones who volunteer to support our police forces in their spare time. Police support volunteers (PSV) play an indispensable role in supporting our country’s policing. Wide-ranging roles and responsibilities are undertaken by PSVs, alongside their day-to-day lives, to support the thin blue line. The Employment Tribunal delivered
its judgment in the police pension discrimination claim brought against PFEW and ruled in favour of the claimants on a number of claims of direct age discrimination and victimisation.
JULY
Chief Operating Officer, Mukund Krishna, was appointed as the Police Federation’s first Chief Executive Officer to lead change,
