FROM THE CEO’S DESK

ONE FIRM STEP AT A TIME

PFEW for the first time after it was founded in 1919 appointed a CEO to make it fit for future. Here he addresses officers and the public at large

As we approach the end of the year, I’d like to take the opportunity to update you on some key pieces of work since my appointment as CEO in September. One of the main reasons I was appointed as CEO was to make improvements to the day to day running of the Federation and to drive professionalism. The immediate challenges that we face affect us both nationally and locally and that’s one of the reasons why I have visited each region. I have listened carefully to our local teams and once again, I thank everyone who has taken the time to talk with me about the service we’re providing to our members. Alongside these meetings, I have also

been working on a ‘way forward’ with regards to the legal challenges that we are currently facing. These are very costly lessons for us to learn, but it is right that the issues raised are dealt with head on. Mistakes like these must never be made again and I take responsibility to implement the necessary changes to build a federation that is fit for the future. Soon after my appointment, I began work

current election timetable – from three to five years, thereby providing continuity and stability of time to deliver the plan. Another primary focus of my work has

been to guide the organisation through some difficult financial decisions. The Federation is funded by its hard-working members, and we take pride in providing an excellent service to the officers who contact us for help and support. However, in order to protect and continually develop these core services, we need to carefully look at all our resources and assets and put them to best use. We will make more formal announcements in due course, but I wanted to outline the National Board and National

on a comprehensive plan for operational improvement. I have now presented the outline of this both locally and nationally. It doesn’t just cover the immediate issues that we face but it offers us a framework to bring in cultural change. It’s vital that every member of the PFEW team, from a rep to the Chair know that they are supported in their work and that concerns, complaints and suggestions are taken seriously. It’s by making improvements to the way that we listen, that we can better adapt to and reflect the needs of our local members. In order to support the work that needs to be done, we have made a submission to the Home Office requesting an extension to the

Council’s decision that some assets would serve us better if they were sold. In addition, we have taken the decision to move to a regional training model for our reps rather than holding courses at Federation House to reduce costs. The Learning & Development team have developed the plan for 2024 with training courses being run out of regional branch venues.

Anyone who knows me will tell you that fundamentally I feel that we all have a moral responsibility to leave things in a better state than which we find them. This is the fundamental concept of work itself and although this process can be difficult at times, the results will speak for themselves. As we

enter the New Year, I look forward to working with you all to bring about these improvements and I value your support as we all stand together for the benefit our entire membership. Please feel free to contact me if you have questions.
