BUZZ.AR COMMUNITY CENTRE


Under a large continuous folding roof, the community centre is a placemaking intervention that will form part of


the new mass housing and commercial quarter development in Kota Kemuning. The building offers flexible spaces with subtle detailing that invite different patterns of occupations and use. The layout is organised with small clusters of enclosed volumes arranged around wide terraces. There is no main entrance so visitors can approach it from all directions, even from the footpaths along the lake across the field.


METAL ROOF SYSTEM The folding roof has a dynamic form that stretches from east to west continuously, protecting a series of enclosed and open spaces below it. The deep overhangs of the roof along the northern edge—combined with minimal columnar support—create a multitude of open yet shaded spaces for different activities.


At the west end of the building, the roof structure moves straight into the ground at a 60-degree angle, leaving it fully exposed. Here, steel horizontal battens cover the truss to provide shading. Meanwhile at the east end, the roof folds up high to form a large performance space. Behind this are ‘garden’ restrooms with inner courtyards to cater to a large number of visitors when there is an event.


Achieving the design intent of the structure and detailing took time and effort. It required a close collaboration with the steel fabricator and roofing supplier to ensure durability and easy maintenance. Among the design priorities was the detailing to hide the gutters.
