Bentley Applications Automate Processes and Streamline Collaboration on Major EUR 200 Million Roadway


Rebuilding a Key Bridge On August 14, 2018, a 210-meter section of the 1,182-meter Morandi Bridge over the Polcevera River in Genoa, Italy suddenly collapsed, destroying buildings below and resulting in casualties and injuries. Since the bridge was part of a key roadway, it was vital to Genoa’s well-being. To avoid long-term impacts to the area, local offi cials tasked Italferr to create a new span while adhering to a tight three-month schedule.


Connecting Participants with Digital Twin Italferr established an open, connected data environment using Bentley’s ProjectWise to manage the fl ow of multidiscipline data, emphasizing collaboration. Using MicroStation, OpenRoads, and OpenBuildings Designer, they defi ned basic criteria to create and curate a digital twin. Computational modeling with a minimized set of information allowed them to create 4D scripts in SYNCHRO, automating processes that were once manual. Another set of scripts within OpenBuildings Designer allowed designers to automatically place diaphragms on the project’s main metal deck.
