Since the pandemic, the benefits of smart home technology have become much clearer to many consumers, but has this filtered through into the cooling sector? Are people getting more switched- on to connected refrigeration appliances? “Some consumers are still trying to understand why they would need a connected cooling appliance,” says BSH’s Ms Posner. “We want to communicate that it’s not just about being able

more visible, allowing consumers to save money by choosing products that consumes less energy. This will also encourage manufacturers to design products that consume less energy.”


Scrutiny Commenting on the environmental benefits, Peter Lawrie, account manager, digital media group, Hitachi, tells Alert: “With the energy cost increases that households are having to tackle, the cost of use for every appliance will come under more scrutiny. “Thanks to the new energy labelling scheme, customers will now be able to clearly see the benefit of more efficient appliances, which will have a direct impact on their pockets. “For retailers, the new labelling scheme should allow them to showcase more efficient products effectively and for Hitachi we have a clear roadmap to meet efficiency targets.”


Driving So, what are the main trends that are driving the cooling market? “Appliances that are on 24 hours a day are becoming more


expensive to run as energy prices rise, so people will want to upgrade to more energy-efficient models,” says Valerie Posner, business unit head, refrigeration, BSH. “As manufacturers, we must ensure that the technology is the very best it can be so that appliances can be as energy efficient as possible. This may mean that appliances have higher initial purchase costs, but, in the long-term, consumers will save money and gain additional benefits. For example, our new fridge-freezers come with better food preservation technology and more flexible storage. These are things that you expect if you’re replacing a 10-year-old model – plus they create less waste.” Size matters too, according to Smeg UK’s head of marketing,


John Davies, who tells Alert: “Capacity is a key for many people, selecting, with style and design. While some consumers will opt for tech, practical size and design to fit your space typically win out.” Commenting on market conditions, he says: “Supply in some


areas has been challenging, but availability is looking a lot more encouraging now.”


Hygiene In light of the pandemic, hygiene has been at the forefront of consumers’ minds – LG is seeing an increasing need for manufacturers to address this in new products and technology. “At CES in 2021, we announced a new model of our popular
