Sustainability is an area where independents can really win – we want to work with you on that’
At this year’s Retra Conference, Dave Andrews, head of retail and online sales and marketing, Sony UK and Ireland, highlighted the brand’s commitment to sustainability, and also looked at the opportunities for independents in a tough market.
Sony’s sustainability and Road To Net Zero plan is in place. By 2025, we will have no plastic in any of our packaging – our
TV boxes are changing, from the print we put on them, to the size of the boxes and the recyclable materials we use. In Europe, we use 100 per cent reusable energy. From a manufacturer’s perspective it’s big on our agenda. We’ve also announced an electric car partnership with Honda. Sustainability is an area where independents can really win – we want to work with you on that.

Positives One of the big positives that came out of lockdown was that it gave businesses and brands time to actually think about what is the right thing to do? A lot of good independents took a step back, restructured their business and rethought the direction they were taking. Hats off to the people in this room [at the Retra Conference] who did that – they did a superb job and it shows in the numbers. The independent sector has done particularly well. We’ve had retail challenges – stores closed, people bought online and there were issues with Covid, distribution, getting stock and semiconductors. Everything was a nightmare from a supplier’s perspective, but there were winners as well as losers. It’s clear from within Sony that the independent specialists were
the ones that actually won. The big national retailers moved away [from stores] - their business went online. Independents have an opportunity to offer experiences in-store – that’s a benefit.
Every time we came out of lockdown, the Sony business went up because we’re a premium brand and you need to demonstrate our products to see the difference. Independents can win by offering that personal service.
Tougher Conditions are definitely going to get a lot tougher – we have to accept that – so it’s important that we maximise every opportunity. In some categories, particularly those that come from the Far East, availability is going to be difficult. The economy is going to take a while to recover, but it always bounces back. You need to create value and push for premium sales – that’s the cash in the till. You can easily sell a £200 TV, but you need a good reason to trade people up and that’s hopefully what Sony can do for you – maximise the profit.
