Steve Jones, managing director of Sirius Buying Group, on the strength of independent retailers to adapt to the latest trends, and the rising demand for inclusive kitchens.

impacted by the crisis in Ukraine as manufacturers and suppliers experience further disruption in global supply chains. Being honest, transparent, practical and caring in terms of how

we look after our customers and our teams will help us all build extra resilience and fortitude alongside healthy profits. The strength of the independent lies in flexibility and the

freedom to shape your own destiny, growing your team and your business exactly as you wish. Sirius Buying Group strongly believes that business leaders should have the opportunity to harness the best of the sector’s ‘hive mind’ which is why the number of new members is continuing to grow exponentially. The leadership team are always keen to keep evolving their

support with a state-of-the-art PIM System, which feeds the Sirius website with over 5,500 products, complete with technical specifications and visual assets from its market-leading approved suppliers, which is also available to all 185+ Sirius members to utilise across their own websites.

The level of design and innovation in our sector is constantly

evolving at all price points as the market responds to the consumer desire for sustainability and utility, including the latest integrated smart technology.

Approach As a sector, we are uniquely placed to tailor our approach to the different audiences we serve as the latest data reveals how different demographics view their shopping experience. Research from Accost shows that 50 percent of consumers buy non-food items online, with a further 31 percent buying online or in-person. We stand ready to help our members to continue to grow and

maintain a relevant and up-to-date online presence – as well as capitalising on their ability to provide wide-ranging advice to help customer navigate the latest smart appliances and new trends in kitchen living.

Future We are strong believers in anticipating the future needs of end users so that we can improve the service our retailers offer and by virtue explore how developments in such areas as digital payment can benefit their businesses. According to a 2020 report by Barclaycard Business, 58 percent

of UK consumers will abandon a purchase if the online checkout process is complicated, while 44 percent will decide against the transaction if they’re not able to use their preferred payment method. In fact, the UK Institute of Customer Service points out that the ability to integrate, human and artificial intelligence-enabled experiences will be crucial to maintaining improvements in customer service, going forwards. Independent retailers therefore have a great opportunity to use their own unique local knowledge and draw on the wisdom and experience of their team as key sales tools. People buy from people and focusing on delivering gold-

standard customer service across every platform is set to be hugely important this year. This is because it is likely that consumer confidence will be

Sophistication The growing sophistication of domestic and commercial appliances and the kitchen’s centrality to family life in the UK is set to play a key part in the property and renovations market as the housing market develops this season with a strong emphasis on indoor outdoor living and the latest cooling technology. I think we also need to remind ourselves that consumer demand for inclusive kitchen products is growing as the population ages – at present the UK median age is 40.5 with 50 percent of the population being older than that. As more people will be caring for elderly relatives at home and potentially needing to adapt their properties for relatives with age- related disabilities, this means we need to have accessibility, safety and ease of use front and centre as part of our support packages and customer service solutions.
