SUPPORTING FUTURES.

For more than 20 years Nina and Jack Finley, parents of Teena Finley Middleton ’77, contributed to the Chemistry Equipment Fund at Queens, providing significant investments to support student and faculty research and prepare students for graduate school and careers in chemistry. With funds generously matched for many years by Jack Finley’s former employer Exxon, their contributions also helped in the construction and outfitting of the Teena Finley Middleton ’77 Chemistry Lab and the Instrumentation Lab.

“The instrumentation significantly enhanced all aspects of our curriculum. In my analytical and environmental chemistry courses, I used it extensively to integrate undergraduate student research and technical skill development into the course and lab curriculum. It also directly impacted and benefited our general chemistry and biochemistry curriculum by giving students direct access and experience using scientific instrumentation often introduced in graduate school or later in their career.”

— Dr. Greg Pillar, professor of environmental science and chemistry and assistant provost for university programs

Trough hands-on learning, the Flame Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy Instrument is used by Dr. Greg Pillar (far left) and students in the lab to determine more than 70 specific elements in solutions or solid samples.
