OPENING MINDS.

Rabbi Judith Schindler, Sklut Professor of Jewish Studies, represented Queens as a member of the newly-formed Charlotte Racial Justice Consortium (CRJC) this past year. The group is a collaborative effort between Queens and four other local higher learning institutions. The CJRC aims to shed light on Charlotte’s difficult history while organizing student-led projects on campus and providing outreach to the community to promote healing. Rabbi Schindler is joined in the consortium by student representatives (Charlotte Racial Equity Leadership Fellows), as well as Associate Dean of Students LeAnna Rice.

Rabbi Schindler teaches courses in Jewish studies, the Holocaust and social justice. She is also the founding director of the Stan Greenspon Center for Peace and Social Justice. Her endowed professorship is made possible through philanthropic support from Lori and Eric Sklut, further enabling interfaith understanding, inspiring advocacy and encouraging servant leadership at Queens.

“Queens’ efforts of diversity and inclusion happened long before it was a buzz word. Our past philanthropy in higher education drove our decision to support Jewish Studies, attracting faculty and students from varied backgrounds and ethnicities. Our gift to endow the professorship with Rabbi Judy, a scholarly leader we have known and trusted for so many years, was icing on the cake.”

— Lori and Eric Sklut
