NOTTS DRIVER WHO SEXUALLY ASSAULTED WOMAN AND CLAIMED VICTIM INITIATED IT IS JAILED
A taxi driver who sexually assaulted a young woman he picked up from a night out has been jailed. Khalil Lali targeted the victim after he picked her up from Notting- ham city centre on September 20 last year. As she sat in the front seat of the car, Lali repeatedly grabbed her hand and forcefully held it on the front of his trousers. The victim was able to flee the vehicle close to her home but was also able to record a brief video showing the make of her attacker's car and the number plate. The following morning the 44- year-old was arrested and denied the allegations against him. He even claimed during a police
interview that it was the victim who initiated the contact in lieu of payment. But, this was con- tradicted by CCTV evidence which showed the contact occurred earlier in the journey as he drove through the city centre. Lali, from Nottingham, denied a single charge of sexual assault but was found guilty by a jury at Nottingham Crown Court. He appeared at court on Septem- ber 15, for sentencing and was jailed for three years and four months.
DC Rory Greer, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This was an appalling attack by a man who as a licensed taxi driver was in a position of trust over his victim. Lali clearly thought he could behave in this way without consequence but hadn’t reckoned on the quick-thinking and tenacity of his victim. “Although she was understandably distraught at what had happened to her, she still had the presence of mind to record crucial details of Lali’s vehicle that allowed us to place him at the scene. “I am pleased that Lali has been bought to justice and won’t be able to target other women in this way in the future.”
OXFORD BLACK CABBIE WHO EXPOSED HIMSELF TO FEMALE CUSTOMER BANNED FOR FIVE YEARS
A black cab driver who exposed himself to a lone female fare has been banned from working as a taxi or PH driver for five years. Zaffran Amjad, 28, had asked to use the toilet at the woman’s home after dropping her off in his hackney cab on July 1 last year. As he came out of the lavatory, he still had his flies undone and his genitals were exposed. Amjad told the woman: “You want this, right?” Prosecuting, Ann Sawyer-Brandish told Oxford Magistrates’ Court on 23 August: “Straightaway she knew what he was doing. She was terrified because he was in her house and she couldn’t go anywhere.”
She said he needed to leave, the court heard. The taxi driver ‘did not

become aggressive and did not say anything’, but rearranged himself and left. In an impact statement read to the magistrates, the victim said she had had to move house after the incident as she no longer felt safe in the property where it happened. Amjad was identified as the driver of the taxi and, following a trial was convicted by the magistrates of a single charge of indecent exposure. He was previously of good character,
convictions on his record. Mitigating, Balaal Khan said his client was married with one child and another on the way and is the family’s main bread-winner. Since the incident he had been unable to work as a taxi driver. He

was a carer for his mother and was well-spoken of in a number of character references. Mr Khan said Amjad ‘wishes to express remorse’ to the victim. The magistrates imposed 16 weeks’ imprisonment suspended for two years. A sexual harm prevention order prevents him from being employed as a taxi or private hire driver or making unwanted sexual advances to women for five years. Chairman of the bench, Dr Bob Mahoney, said: “This is a nasty offence. The impact on the victim is quite profound.” Amjad, from Oxford, will be on the sex offender register for seven years. He was ordered to pay £300 in compensation and £654 costs.
