It’s nearly that time again! PHTM EXPO is back at ArenaMK, Milton Keynes on Wednesday 14 and Thursday 15 May. With over 50 exhibitors displaying the latest trade vehicles, technology, phone systems, call centres, insurance, card payments, in-vehicle CCTV, social media gurus, legal services, consultants and of course the NPHTA.
PHTM EXPO is the only national gathering of the UK taxi and private hire trade, and is not just open to operators and drivers, but also local authorities. So why not invite your local licensing officers to come along?
If you can spare a minibus from your fleet, you could even provide the transport so that the event costs them absolutely nothing apart from their time out during a working day. If you register in advance at

The venue is centrally located and is easily accessible by major UK motorways, and there are fast trains from many cities including London, Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham with the Expo just an £8 cab ride from the station; plus Luton airport is only 25 miles away.

Two years ago, I invited the licensing officers from my area, Cannock Chase, and although I did not provide the transport, as I am usually there for the full three days as an exhibitor for NPHTA, they came under their own steam. I arranged to meet them by an exhibition stand of brand-new hackney cabs for the simple reason that these state-of-the-art gleaming beauties came with darkened glass behind the B-pillar. At that time, licensing policy in Cannock Chase did not permit this dark glass for hackney carriages, whether they were cabs or saloons.
I took the opportunity to present arguments for removing this restriction: l NO evidence of a public safety issue and all licensing policy, especially that which places an onerous burden on the trade, should be based on evidence.
l Dark glass is fitted primarily to reduce energy consumption during hot weather and provide protection against UV radiation from the sun.
l The restriction on darkened glass reduces driver choice when replacing old vehicles for newer ones.
l According to the DfT, over 75% of councils have already scrapped this restriction for the above reasons.
I was able to make these arguments against a backdrop of these vehicles in showroom condition. My final comment, as I pointed to them, was: “Look, this is the future of vehicles in our industry!”
A few weeks later, they announced that the restriction on darkened glass was to be scrapped, provided the glass was factory fitted. Job done!
