THE RIPPLE EFFECT
What is the Information Commissioner’s Office?
The Information Commissioner’s Office is an
independent regulator, responsible for regulating data protection, ensuring that organisations respect individual’s data privacy. The ICO regulates the whole economy, including private business, government’ and the public sector.
The ICO is here to help everyone in your organisation navigate data protection. It has resources to support you in the event of a data breach:
This is where the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) can help.
The ICO has guidance that can help if you are worried there might have been a data breach in your vehicle. There is also information and advice available for people, who are worried that their information has been shared.
What can you do?
Think carefully before you share personal information. If you are worried that information you have shared could have been a data breach, speak to your office and promptly assess the risks to the individuals involved, please see:
https://shorturl.at/O4vNH including your reporting and notification duties, please see:

Consider the person who could be affected by the breach. You might want to speak to them and acknowledge what has happened. Remember to be human and accessible in your response and commit to making sure it does not happen again. Let them know about the ICO.
If a customer is worried that their information has been shared when it shouldn’t have – again, let them know about the ICO. Direct them to this simple one page resource, or more detailed guidance on the ICO’s website:

A breach can have a far-reaching ripple effect that disrupts a person’s life. But you can help to stop the ripple from spreading further.

NPHTA and ICO working together to keep the message simple
We are very pleased and in fact honoured to be increasingly working so closely with the ICO, and hope to bring you far more clear and simple information bulletins on all things data protection and UKGDPR. Remember, the ICO does not have any desire to be taking action against you, its desire is to try to make sure it never has to - the only way to achieve this is to provide you all with the information you need to help keep data safe.
ICO at PHTM EXPO
It was an absolute delight to welcome a representative from the Information Commissioner’s Office to this year’s PHTM EXPO, and to show them around the trade suppliers, as a meet and greet. The feedback was that they really enjoyed the event, the discussions and getting to have a deeper understanding of how our industry works. They look forward to working with us more in the coming months and years.
Always looking to support and protect members at all levels, a united trade is a powerful voice.
