IT NEVER RAINS BUT WHAT IT POURS...
That’s the way that saying goes, is it not? Anyway, it’s been a bit of a strange month really, both trade-wise and Association-wise. You’ll see from the front page that there’s trouble at

deciding about which vehicles to allow for licensing as hackney carriages. And still deciding. So we could- n’t actually bring you the outcome of these deliberations in this edition, on account of they’re still deliberat- ing. We’ll
let you
know... eventually. Now then... you’ll also see that Opinion has been written rather by remote control this month, as Chief Anorak is a bit indis-
posed. He’s told you all about it – well, not the boring bits, just the fact that he’s not been himself lately. But he’s still all there with his onions, no fear... things are going on in the background that we hope will knock your socks off... eventually. However, the usual newsy departments proliferate as per nor- mal... am particularly partial to the News page with all the pho- tos. Talk about the natives being rest- less! And there are loads of other cages being rattled: about dereg, about
fees,
about stations and access. Somebody rang the Association office last week and asked us if there was
a national law about setting the “correct” number of taxi rank spaces for the num- ber of taxis in the district. We wish! But you never know – it could happen... even- tually. Councillors in the Essex town are not just intent on letting the grass grow under
their feet; they are measuring how much they have – at a cost of £150,000. According to the Daily Mail, a study to check the size of lawns in public areas such as parks has been com- missioned by the local authority and -
to
make matters worse – it comes just
five
years after it spent £45,000 on a similar survey. This time, it seems, the measure- ments need to be
recalculated using ‘sophisticated’ elec- tronic equipment. Critics have branded the project a ‘bizarre’ waste of money but the council insists the work is essential before it appoints a company to cut the grass. It is supposed to be taking nine months before the results are known, so in time the grass will be cut... eventually. Meanwhile, have a good read.
