HMRC KEEPING A WATCHFUL EYE ON YOUR TAX RETURN


One thing is for sure, get your tax return (Self Assessment) right as best you can, but be aware of HMRC improved software to marry up all sorts of information. In the past there was only a manual comparison of information, which was then very much hit and miss, along with being labour intensive, despite the information being in a computer format. What HMRC have now produced is intelligent software, to allow the inte- gration and subsequent risk analysis to help them pick up on returns that have been incorrectly completed. The process literally flags up errors to be reviewed. This then allows them a risk opportunity to enquire into the return.

NA (Nationwide Assist) is a trading style of CAMS (Central Accident Management Services) who are an ABI 1st Tier subscriber to the Association of British Insurers (ABI). CAMS is also authorised and regu- lated by the FSA and approved for claims management activities by the Ministry of Justice.


For those who have just started, or have done during 2012-13, and who may not yet have completed their return, make sure that income from pre- vious employment(s) has been included. Most people should by law have received a P60 from previous employers by 19 May 2013, showing any pay and tax. Don’t forget, if you have made a mistake, you can voluntarily amend your return, if within HMRC time limits. It is important for those who have had more than one employment to make sure their last employer has used previous pay and tax details in the year, as we have experienced instances where the new employer has not taken this into account. It seems very harsh, as to the employee they have done noth- ing wrong, but HMRC do not always see it that way, expecting the employee to have checked this through. In cases such as this, we have been success- ful in requesting that the penalty be waived. However what has happened is, it is too late to then avoid HMRC having already taken the opportunity to look at the Self Employed profits. The same applies where the following common sources of income have been missed: • Pension payment: Private and state • Annuities • Part time PAYE income Note: especially as so much onus is put on employers these days to iden- tify employees immediately via the Real Time Information that from April 2013 is now mandatory. • Bank interest • Dividends Making sure your self assessment return has no missed entries goes a long way towards reducing the risk of an HMRC intervention (or tax enquiry as more commonly known.)

NAME AND SHAME


A new approach by HMRC is to publish the names of tax defaulters. We have immediately contacted HMRC and now have taken over the han- dling of their affairs, taking the pressure off the client, using our expertise in dealing with all matters in an expedient way.
