ASHFORD CABBIE WHO DROVE LIKE A MADMAN LOSES APPEAL
An Ashford cabbie has failed to get his licence back - after a court heard how he had “frightened the living daylights” out of three passengers by driving “like a madman”. Rofiqul Khan, 32, was told he could not oper- ate as a taxi driver after the women com- plained about his behaviour. It was revealed that this was the seventh com- plaint - involving 15 people - made against the Kennington cabbie in five years. Khan had his licences to operate as a propri- eter and to drive a cab licence revoked by Ashford
Borough
Council. Mr Khan appealed against the rulings by the council and magis- trates and asked for
his licences to be rein- stated. But a judge, sitting with two magistrates, threw out the appeal - and handed him a £1,000 bill for costs - on top of the £720 bill for earlier appeals. Philip Williams, for the council, said Khan had “frightened the living daylights” out of the women by driving too fast. Another passenger, Lucy Lincoln,
later
revealed: “His driving was frightening me. He was driving like a mad- man and swearing. It was scary.” Khan then stopped his taxi near Broad Oak “in the dark” and turned off his car ignition and lights during the wran- gle over money. “That was shocking behaviour. If there is
one person who should not be allowed to drive it is Mr Khan.” The council’s licens- ing manager John Godfrey told how the taxi driver had been the subject of six other complaints, including allegations that he was rude, intimidating, had been racing with another taxi driver, driving away leaving a passenger stranded and attempting to kiss a passenger in his car. Khan denied all the allegations, which had not resulted in any dis- ciplinary action - the complaints were re- corded on his file. Mr Godfrey accused Khan of lying about his claim that he feared the women, who had all been drinking, were “trying to get one over him”.
SIX AMBER VALLEY DRIVERS FOUND WITHOUT BADGES
Six taxi drivers are to receive warnings after being caught without a required taxi badge. Amber Valley Borough Council and Der- byshire Police carried out checks across the area last month. Fourty-four vehicles were inspected, with
two prohibition notices issued,
five drivers
advised about minor issues and six drivers having no badge. However, chairman of the council’s licensing committee, Cllr Allen King said that overall, the standard was high- er than expected. He
told the Belper News: “The failure rate on these checks was min- imal.” Mmmm....Whilst
vehicles at Amber Val- ley came out with a good report card in recent checks,
WELLING DRIVER BANNED TWICE ON SAME DAY
A Welling taxi driver has been jailed for 90 days after being caught driving hours after receiving a ban. According to the Bex- ley News Shopper, Anthony Olson was sentenced twice on the same day for sepa- rate offences after officers spotted him driving his black cab at 1pm on 29 May.
The 63-year-old had only walked out of Medway Magistrates’ Court at 11.30am that day after being given a 30-month driving ban and a 90-day sus- pended prison sen- tence for drink driving. At 3.30pm on May 29, he was charged with driving while disquali- fied and appeared via virtual court before
Medway magistrates at around 4.30pm when he received a 36-month driving ban on top of his prison sentence. Inspector Bob Piatt said: “Olson showed a blatant disregard for the law by getting behind the wheel and picking up fares literal- ly hours after being banned from driving.”
