THE BERNIE THE

ROSE SET TO BLOOM ON ST ANNE’S LINKS

This month’s stellar event is the Open Golf Championship, set to take place at Lytham St Annes in mid July. This year with Tiger enjoying a rennaissance and the bookies reverting to type by not wishing to be over exposed, and a number of high pro- file English and european golfers looking to set down a marker, the event looks to be difficult to win. I don’t believe so as these days because of the new qualification process where you can now qualify in your own continent rather than at the satellite courses around the venue, a large proportion of the field have no feeling for the event. Conse- quently you can discount most of the Americans and a large proportion of the Asian tour.

Justin Rose

One player who stands out for me is JUSTIN ROSEwho is widely avail- able at double carpet (33/1). He has been in good form this year (he leads the race to Dubai) but more importantly he has always been a fine links player and he also has the temperament to play well under pressure. My other main fancy is the rejuvenated SERGIO GARCIA

who is also widely available at 33/1. On two previous occasions he has been in a good position to win the Open but circum- stances contrived against him. His accuracy tee to green is ex- ceptional and if he holes a fair proportion of puts on the dance floor he will surely go close. Finally my out of the ball park pick is the young Belgian,NICHOLAS COLSAERTS who is 80/1 with Ladbrokes. He is fearless, strong and very very long.

It’s the Diamond Jubilee and for the first time since 1948 the Olympics returns to Great Britain. Feel good factor or what! Now I’m not saying that we are going to dominate the track, I think we can safely leave that to Jamaica, Kenya and the USA, but we have a surfeit of world class competitors in a majority of the events that form the Olympics. Look at our cyclists (there’s loads of golds there), look at our rowers (there’s loads

of golds there), what about our mariners, archers (remember Agincourt) and that’s not even accounting for our swimmers, and gymnasts. The point I am making is that I believe the quote of BET365 of the number of gold medals that Great Britain will win is attractively set at plus or minus 221/2 golds – that means if we win 23 gold medals we win, 22 gold medals and we lose. And the price? an unbelievable 10/11!! This is a go to war price as I believe Britain will win in the region of 35 golds. Plunder the tea caddy, empty the bank and gorge yourself!

FOOTBALL: 2012 DOMESTIC

The 2012 domestic season doesn’t begin until mid August but sometimes it is good to strike early and I noticed and have stud- ied the opening odds for the forthcoming season. Last year my readers will know that I tipped-up both Reading (at 16/1) and Charlton Athletic (7/1) before the season began and that re- sulted in a 135/1 winning double. This year I fancy strongly BLACKBURN ROVERS in what looks a very easy Championship. Of the relegated teams they have the wherewithal to mount a serious challenge and in a division that looks light on quality and with the purchase of Danny Murphy from Fulham to spearhead their campaign, I think 16/1 is an incredible price. In division one, I

quite like the look of promoted SWINDON (available at 10/1) and in division two I would have an interest on moneybags FLEETWOOD TOWN (at 7/1).
