IN THE NEWS PUSSY CAT, PUSSY CAT, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?

Cats are known to roam, but

intrepid

moggy Stuart has set a new standard - by secretly hitching a ride from Swindon to Bris- tol. Simon Tofield, of Hay- don Wick, was dismayed when his one-year-old black and white pet disap- peared on the first day he let him out of the house after being vac- cinated and neutered. The

52-year-old

searched the area and put up posters, but had given up the search, when nine days later the RSPCA called to say Stuart had been found in Bristol and identified by his microchip. Simon, who runs Celebrity Limousines from his

home, believes the crafty kitty

hid on the back axle of his white stretch limo and took a trip to a wedding in Stanton Fitzwarren, where he then hitched another ride to Bristol. Simon told the Swindon Advertiser: “It’s amaz- ing that he has got that far. When I got the phone call I thought it would be the RSPCA in Swindon or somewhere nearby, but not Bristol. “I drove down there

and picked him up and brought him back. I think he’s extremely lucky that when he jumped out from the back of the limo he didn’t get run over. But how did he get from there to Bristol? “It’s a complete mys- tery, and the only way I can think of is he has hitched a ride some- how. I had kind of given up on him and thought he had gone.”

Stuart disappeared from Simon’s home, in Francomes, on May 18 and was found by a man under a car in Bishopston, a suburb of Bristol, on Sunday, nine days later. A vet said he could never have covered that distance on foot and said he had dam- age to his claws and balls of his feet, which was consistent with sliding on a road sur- face. He had lost his collar and was cov- ered in grease, which Simon thinks might come from an axle. Simon said the feline explorer is now play- ing in the back garden with his brother Char- lie, but he will have to take precautions to ensure he does not go on other long-range excursions.

NEWQUAY OWNERS CALL OVER MISSING HAMSTERS

A group of kind-heart- ed taxi drivers are looking to locate the owner of a hamster they helped save from the clutches of a sea- gull in Central Square on May. Liz Turner from Tren- creek rang to ask if Hamcandy has got a bit of white under ‘his’ chin while Emma Har- vey

inquired as to whether ‘he’

from Pentire is cream and

brown. Both were dis- appointed - Hamcandy is a girl! Liz told the Newquay Voice: “We went out on the Camel Trail in March and when we came back Mr H’s cage door was open. We never saw him again despite setting traps and putting bits of food down. It would be a miracle if we saw

Mr H again. We have got close-up pictures of him so we will be able to tell. “My

12-year-old

daughter Phoebe saw the picture of the ham- ster and said it looked like Mr H. We have got another hamster now but it would be good to have him back if it is Mr H.” Emma said: “Henry has been missing from home in Pentire since February. We are keen to see him come home if it is him. Hamsters walk for miles in deserts so he could have walked that far into town.” Mmmm. . . . .Anyone missing any other pets? We’ve had a mis- ing tortoise in the past.... Snake? Croco- dile? Do let us know - Ed.
