ROUBLES AND DOLLARS!

BOOK COLUMN

hawks may wrest the NFC West from the 49ers and if doing so could go deep into the playoffs. Certainly they are high on con- fidence and should higher seeds fall in the divisional round their path could open up.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

We are now at the knockout stage with the round of 16 draw being made in December. German football is certainly on a high and I think that people are still underestimating BORUSSIA DORTMUND, who are still widely available at 9/1 for Champi- ons League glory. They out-muscled Real Madrid in the group stage and Real are top priced at 7/2 – so you do the maths! EUROPA LEAGUE

HAPPY NEW YEAR! You’ve survived Christmas and now all you’ve got to do is pay for your wife’s shopping in the January Sales! At this time of the year I like to start building my portfolio of ante posts in the hope of maturity by the summer and regular readers of this column will know that I have managed to tip up some fairly long odds winners at this time of year. A note of caution though; because the information is detailed here so far in advance you have to temper your bets as some selections may not make their targets. However in the January column 2012 I did point you in the direction of two subsequent Chel- tenham winners (Simonsig at 14/1 and Riverside Theatre at 7/1). Similarly readers of the column in April will have noted that I had a hunch that the Peyton Manning led Denver Bron- cos were a marvellous price for the Superbowl at 40/1 and now at the business end of the season they are certainly in with a shout of Superbowl glory, currently one of the favourites at 5/1. This leads us nicely in to the Superbowl itself. SUPERBOWL

The exploits of the New York Giants over the last few seasons have certainly blown apart the myth that the Superbowl often goes to the team with home field advantage and the best reg- ular season record. My ante posts (laid down in this column throughout 2012) are certainly doing well... Previously advised have been the HOUSTON TEXANS (12/1)THE DENVER BRON- COS (40/1) and the ATLANTA FALCONS (14/1). But as alluded to, teams that are on a roll can carry all before them and so in my final picks for this year’s Superbowl make sure you have an interest on the RG3 led WASHINGTON REDSKINS at 40/1 and a slightly bigger interest on the SEAT- TLE SEAHAWKS at 25/1. They are both likely to be wild card teams but the Sea-

Seattle Seahawks JANUARY 2013 PHTM

Will Rafa be able to turn the hostility against him round? He certainly might if he wins the Europa League for CHELSEA and at 9/1 (Blue Square, Sky Bet) they must command plenty of re- spect. But for my main pick in a competition I have not men- tioned prior to the knockout stage are the money bags from Russia.... ANZHI MAKHACHKALA who are a top priced 16/1 with Bet Fred. This is just the type of competition to put Russ- ian football back in the European gaze. FA CUP

The top British cup competition may go to LIVERPOOL. At 11/1 this could easily fall to the improving Reds, especially as they are likely to strengthen their squad in the January window. With MAN CITY out of Europe, what is left for last year’s champi- ons? Their size of squad should serve them well and the fans might just demand another away day at Wembley. The 11/2 on offer is a fair price.

GREYHOUND RACING

The Greyhound Derby in June is a long way off but I’ve been watching some of this year’s potential winners over the last few months and I think a small punt on EDEN STAR at 25/1 merits a wise investment. His explosive pace around Wim- bledon’s tight corners will stand him in good stead. HORSE RACING

Eden Star

And finally with a view to next year’s clas- sics my first bet is a speculative punt (as the horse in question may not have this as its target) on the Richard Han- non trained TORONADO. Richard Hughes has been on record as singing his praises as one of the most pleasing horses he has ever sat on and let’s be honest, he’s had many to choose from. 16/1 is a tremendous price to modest stakes. Finally the Derby is all about one horse and any winnings left over fromKINGSBARNS victory in the Racing Post Trophy (advised in this column) should be redi- rected towards Epsom (5/1).
