IN-CAR CAMERA QUESTIONNAIRE RESULTS
Yes indeed, the results of yet another ques- tionnaire. First question: did we get as many responses as we did to the Law Commission questionnaire? No, not really... Did we get ten per cent? No, not really... But we man- aged 64 – which on historic returns, is quite a reasonable result.
By the time you are reading this issue, Southampton Council’s appeal against the order to remove the sound recorders from their licensed vehicles will be just around the corner: the 30th and 31st of January. And that will indeed be a rather significant case. We won’t know the results in time for the February edition, but you might be able to get them on the NPHA website, as soon as we get our hands on them. member, that is...
HOW TO PHOTO - WHO TO PHOTO 1. Should in-car cameras be nationally mandatory?
2. Should in-car cameras be under control of councils? 3. Should in-car cameras be the choice of the owner/driver? 4. Should this include sound recording?
5. Should the cameras record inside and outside the vehicle? 6. Should recording be active whenever the ignition is on?
7. Should passengers be warned they are being recorded on camera? 8. Should passengers be warned they are being recorded on sound?

I have to say that the results of this ques- tionnaire were almost exactly as I predicted. Certainly most of the respondents were fully in favour of cameras in general; 64 per cent said that they should be mandatory. But the biggest negative was against councils being in charge of the cameras: 76 per cent said No to that.
Certainly most of you thought that the public would welcome this type of protection, and that they would not find it intrusive. After all, it’s already in every other form of transport; why shouldn’t it be in taxis/PHVs as well?
Of the 64 who responded, seven identified that they had already been affected, and cameras had helped them; that is a very high percentage.
I am pleased to say that the
results were from as wide a spread of licens- ing areas as I could have wished for: from Torquay and Weymouth in the south, to York and Newcastle in the north/north east; and from Cambridge and Great Yarmouth in the east, to Monmouth and Blenau Gwent in Wales.
Yes, we even had one from London!
Only two of the respondents actually put in a comment: one said, “Within three months I got money back from non-payers, all pas- sengers behaved better and never complained. I felt safer in all aspects.” But for every good thing that pops up, there is always an opposite, and the gentleman from Wyre says: “At best a deterrent for ‘normal’ people, drunks – drugs – idiots, No effect.” I can only assume that the gentleman has never had a camera in his cab.
We got a couple of people on the phone and in the office saying you could buy one of these cameras for 20 quid on line, and although they were not the most robust piece of equipment in the world, they did indeed record pictures and had a noticeable effect on people’s behaviour in the taxi.
So watch this space, and do go out and have a look at getting a camera – and mentioning it to your insurance company – because safety could indeed be followed by savings.
