it,

because it is being driv- en by a regional Assembly Member Byron Davies, Welsh

busi-

ness. Mr Davies has owned the vehicle for five

years, but has recent- ly had it branded with his photograph. The cab doubles up as a surgery where elec- tors can consult him. “It’s very handy, espe- cially if there is no suitable community centre to hire,” he told the Bridgend and Porthcawl Gem. “I just park up in a pre- determined place and residents come in and explain their prob- lems. “Many people are intrigued to see me in this cab. A few have tried to hail me as I have been driving along so it’s good fun. “I use it now as a runaround. It is quite economical and I tend to take it out on con- stituency business. It’s a great ice-breaker.”

READING DRIVER WINS COMMUNITY CHAMPION AWARD

This year’s award for Community Champion went to a man who has worked tirelessly over the past 15 years to raise more

than

£30,000 for charity. Hackney carriage driv- er Aftab Malik, from West Reading, has done everything from walking over coals, sponsored walks to abseils and parachute jumps, for a range of causes. He told getreading: “I started with a spon- sored walk and after I thought it was too easy just walking to raise money so I decided to do something more daring.” His next chal- lenge is the Reading Half Marathon in March 2013. Aftab has been no stranger to winning

awards over the last 15 years – in 2010 he was given the Mayor’s Award in the Reading Sports Personality of the Year, yet when talk- ing about his work he remained as modest

as ever. He said: “I can’t believe it. When I saw everyone who was up for the award I didn’t think I was even up to their standard. I feel very privileged.”
