WAXI SERVICE TO BE LAUNCHED IN SALFORD QUAYS
A water taxi service will be launched on Salford Quays by next summer. The floating commuter service will transport people
between
Chapel Wharf, near the Lowry Hotel, and MediaCityUK by June
2013. According to the Sal- ford Advertiser, Sal- ford City Council and Peel Holdings are looking for an operator after
they won a
£500,000 grant from the Local Sustainable Transport Fund, part of
the Irwell River Park programme. There are five pro- posed landing points which will be at Chapel Wharf, Ord- sall, Clippers Quay, Imperial War Museum North and MediaCi- tyUK.

They’re loved by shop- pers and tourists but Dublin’s cycle taxis are about to feel the long arm of the law on their shoulders. Drivers and operators will have to pay fines of up to €1,900 for contravening

posed new regul- ations. If they want to contin- ue ferrying shoppers, they will be forced to apply for a licence and driver’s permit - at a cost of €60 a year. The planned rules are contained in Dublin
regulations, co-founder Andrew Casey wel- comes the move. “We have been pushing for the regulation since we started,” he told the Dublin Evening Herald. He said the laws will help to “establish the future of this type of transport” by putting it on a proper regulatory footing.

LONDON MAYOR SEEKS BAN ON DANGEROUS PEDICABS
The Mayor and TfL have called for a change to legislation that would allow them to effectively ban dan- gerous pedicabs in the capital. In its submission to the Law Commission, TfL proposes that pedi- cabs
and ‘novelty’ other vehicles
should be brought under the same legisla- tive framework that governs taxis and PHVs. This would give TfL the power
to
remove pedicabs from the capital’s roads as they don’t meet the same rigorous safety and licensing stan- dards as taxis and PHVs. Although there are a relatively small num- ber of pedicabs, which operate in a small part of central London, they have a dispropor- tionate effect on traffic congestion and con- gregate in pedestrian
areas – both of which impact on bus passen- gers and other road users. Whilst clearly there are some
responsible
pedicab companies, even they cannot ensure the safety of their passengers to an acceptable level and the Mayor and TfL believe that they are unsuitable for Lon- don’s roads. Neither pedicabs nor their rid- ers are licensed and there is no require- ment for their riders to undergo CRB checks. Pedicabs are often unroadworthy
and
uninsured, and riders often disobey road rules and put the pub- lic at risk. Between October 2011 and November 2012, joint
seizures and 839 warn- ings issued to pedicab drivers. The most
recent
enforcement activity saw five arrests for offences including rid- ing
riding on the footway and obstruction. One of the people arrested had been wanted for deportation by the UK Border Agency for 18 months. Boris Johnson,
the
Mayor of London, said:

cabs anyone can just hop aboard and ply for hire. It has become clear that a voluntary registration scheme would not have pro- duced

arrests and dangerously,
