OF THE YEAR

Boland had ‘taken her life away’. April page 50. In May a banned driver with an addiction to the excitement of instigat- ing police chases, injured two officers and caused £24,000 of damage to five squad cars. The

Northampton

Chronicle reports that Reece Bosworth, 19, robbed a taxi driver of his Mercedes and then went on a destructive chase through North- ampton in a bid to avoid arrest. The judge in passing sentence said: “This case is aggravated by two matters;

firstly,

you were approxi- mately three times over the drink-drive limit for alcohol and secondly, your exten- sive

record pre-sentence for

previous convictions. The

report indicates your motivation is your thrill of dangerous driving when you are pursued by the police. I com- pletely agree with that assessment.” May page 20. In August a taxi driver could be facing sus- pension after being caught speeding three times on the same stretch of road in the same morning! He had previously held an

unblemished

licence for over 20 years but this unfortu- nate experience has left him close to 12 points. August page 14. Then there was the case of the Derby taxi driver who has been jailed for 12 months after asking his friend to take the points on his licence for some

speeding offences. Derby Crown Court heard that he came up with the deception after his vehicle was caught four times by speed cameras in three months last year. Papers were sent to Alam’s home; he ordered his wife to send them back to police, saying the cab was being driven by Polish builder Zbig- niew Matyna. The pair pleaded guilty to con- spiracy to pervert the course of justice. The Derby Telegraph reports that Matyna, who had never been in trouble before, was given a six-month prison term, which was suspended for a year. He must do 40 hours’ unpaid work and pay £310 prose- cution costs. October page 26. In a similar theme to our winner opposite there was the story last month of the York private hire driver who abandoned his pas- senger with what turned out

to be

appendicitis. Luke Sandland, a lan- guages student at University of York, phoned for a car in the early hours of a recent Sunday morning, after suffering from what was found to be an infected

appendix

which later had to be removed. Luke, 21, told the York Press:

“I couldn’t

sleep all night, so at about 5am I decided to go to the hospital, but I didn’t think an ambulance was nec- essary. I told the driver I thought I was going to be sick. He started pulling up, but I was

sick out of the win- dow, although I didn’t get any on the car. He pulled up and I opened the door and was sick again.” At that point, near the Sainsburys store in Foss Bank, the driver of the PHV asked Luke to get out of the car, and drove away. Luke then had to walk the rest of the way to hos- pital. He was later told his appendix was infected and necrotic and he was kept in hospital until

the next day

when it was removed. Doctors said if he had not made it to the hos- pital,

the

consequences could have been fatal. December p 22. And so to the rogues gallery where in pic- ture one we see the hair brained stunt of Slawomir Oszwa in attempting to run a railway barrier. December p 40. Picture 3 sees a taxi driver attempting to make the British div- ing team by diving off Tower Bridge. August p 40. Finally picture two illustrates the story of the Somerset driver who accidentally near- ly destroyed an historic monument when his cab veered into the said monu- ment while sneezing. This doesn’t

really

qualify as a sad b*****d story as it wasn’t his intention to destroy property. We only include it here because it is quite eventful, especially for the townsfolk of Ched- dar. Gorge yourself on that! May p 24.
