A Swadlincote taxi firm has introduced a ‘zero tolerance’ policy to crime after a gang of youths went on a drunken rampage, attacking an employee and causing hundreds of pounds’ damage to its headquarters. Sadiq Chaudhry, who owns 24/7 26 Cars, in Alexandra Road, says he is sick of the abuse he and his employees suffer from drunken yobs.
Mr Chaudhry, who has owned the firm for two years, said the youths ransacked his premis- es at 1.20am on a recent Sunday after they started fighting with each other. He told the Burton Mail: “There was blood all over the place. They attacked
our receptionist, who is now battered and bruised. It’s not on and we’re doing something to stop it. I’m losing good, hon- est drivers because they are scared to work at my firm.” He said the youths broke into reception, kicked walls and trashed the front wait- ing room, breaking an outdoor security light and stealing fixtures, a spare tyre and a clock. Later that day, an eld- erly woman fell over in the car park because there was no light. Mr Chaudhry said: “It is a continuous distur- bance and our drivers just don’t want to get involved. We’re in a no-win situation. Our receptionist managed to escape serious
injury this time.
“The goods they stole are worth £200 without the damage costs. We hope the old lady is okay, this was what’s happened as a result.” The firm will now have round-the-clock secu- rity guards monitoring which customers are allowed to use the service. Taxi services will not be given to anyone who may be abusive.
Mr Chaudhry said: “We are losing busi- ness because people are too scared to come in. We’re not putting up with it any more and the zero tol- erance policy will be a long-term solution.” Police were called to the incident and arrested a 23-year-old man at the scene.

Mr Newdall, who owns private hire firm Pre- mier Cars, had just left their offices in Moor- town, Leeds, at about 7.45pm on Friday 11 December when the robbers struck. He told the Yorkshire Evening Post: “I went to my car and two men ran round. One of them asked me for the bag I was carrying.” Mr Newdall refused, but then one of the suspects - who both wore ski masks and were in black - threat-
ened him with a hand- gun.
“He pushed it into my neck and said ‘Don’t mess me about’,” said Mr Newdall, 41.
He handed over the bag, which contained cash, and the pair fled, running through gar- dens towards Bentcliffe Lane where they are thought to have left the area in a vehicle.
Mr Newdall, of Alwoodley, said it was a frightening ordeal. “I was very upset at the time and I have been a bit angry,” he said.
“It is the second time it has happened in 14 months. I had one in October last year when I got hit by a crowbar on my knee. “I am self-made, I’ve
never asked anybody for anything and I think it’s a shame. I also lost my father five months ago so I have had a really bad year.” Mr Newdall is keen to see his attackers tracked down and has now offered the £1,000 reward for information leading to the convic- tion of those responsible.
Both suspects are thought to be white. One was slightly over 6ft, the other slightly shorter.
Anyone witnessing anything suspicious in the area of Harrogate Road and Bentcliffe Lane around 8pm on December 11 is asked to contact Killingbeck CID via 0845 606 0606 or call Crimestoppers on: 0800 555 111.
