SHORTEST MONTH, LONGEST WAIT...?

Greetings from sunny California! Told you that you

wouldn’t be able to get rid of me that easily... I could fill this edition with my experiences and adventures so far in getting over here, which on the whole went very well. My initial report confirms that the Covid pandemic is still impacting on the lives of all Californians - and I daresay most other US states. No consolation, I know, but fact. It’s gonna take some time to be rid of it, for sure.

The longest wait? I’m referring to the queues of people who are waiting to have their first Covid jab. So far UK targets are not being met, but the numbers are still very impressive - and higher for UK citizens than those of most other countries in the world, including the USA. This is where we swing in with our massive PHTM salute in this edition to the Cabs for Jabs campaign: the hundreds of UK licensed operators and drivers who are offering free or discounted transport to and from vaccination centres for those groups of people who are eligible for the jab. Once again our trade comes to the rescue, and we believe they deserve full recognition and huge thanks. We offer this, collectively, inside.

Our other major campaign - and spotlight feature in this edition - is relevant to council driver grants during Covid. How crucially important is such a grant for the survival of so many in our industry? You'll see a breakdown of all the information we have to date as regards those local author- ities that are supporting the industry... and we’ll be naming and shaming those that do not. Further survey info will be available in our March edition - and we thank all of you who have responded so quickly and accurately, as usual.

Our other departments abound: Round the Councils, Worldwide Taxi Focus. Know Your Rights, usual contribu- tions from Unite and GMB... and we welcome back Wayne Casey in Wayne’s World! Also we have another welcome contribution from Mike Galvin, discussing the need for national standards; and in the NPHTA column this month Board member Steven Toy waxes lyrical on the matter of whether refusing a passenger for not wearing a mask who claims exemption constitutes discrimination.

So - you’d better get reading! And thank you once again for being there and staying safe: for your families, for your passengers, for your colleagues, and for this publication.

Hopefully the spread of the vaccination will make an impact, and eventually once again we’ll be able to get about the place without those hideous masks - without which at the present time we cannot expect to make any progress to overcome this awful pandemic.

Hang in there...! FEBRUARY 2021 READ IT LOVE IT
