LEICESTER UBER DRIVER WHO RAPED PASSENGER AT KNIFEPOINT JAILED FOR 16 YEARS


An Uber driver who raped a female passenger at knifepoint has been sentenced to 16 years in prison after his victim’s rapid 999 call allowed police to track and arrest him within an hour. Adam Daley, 33, from Leicester, targeted the woman in her 20s in December last year. The victim and her friend were outside a Leicester city centre bar when Daley pulled up in his white Toyota Auris and offered to take them home if they booked the ride through the app. After dropping the friend off, Daley began making highly inapprop- riate, sexual comments to the victim. He then pulled over in a layby claiming he needed to use the toilet. Once stopped, Daley ordered the victim into the front seat, pulled down her top, and forced her to perform a sex act


while threatening her with a knife. After she pleaded with him to stop, Daley abandoned the woman in the layby. The victim called the police immediately at 5:30am. Officers quickly identified Daley’s vehicle and tracked his move- ments using CCTV and ANPR cameras. Daley was stopped and arrested. As officers moved in, Daley tried to stamp on his mobile phone to destroy evidence. Detectives later discovered Daley had driven past the victim in the layby three times after the assault. Though forensic tests found the victim’s DNA on him, Daley denied the rape, claiming her DNA had transferred to him because she


drank from a water bottle in his car, which he claimed he later used to wash himself. Additionally, Daley tested positive for cocaine at the time of his arrest and officers found indecent images of children on his phone during their digital investigation. Following a trial, Daley was found guilty of rape, sexual assault, possession of a knife, and threats to kill. He also pleaded guilty to making indecent images of a child and drug driving. On 10 July, at Leicester Crown Court, he was sentenced to 16 years in prison, handed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, a restraining order, and a 20-month driving ban.


An Uber spokesperson con- demned the attack, stating: “This was a truly shocking incident.”

A 73-year-old former taxi driver who raped two young girls and made one pregnant has been sentenced to 22 years in prison. Peter King groomed his victims in the 1990s and 2000s when they were as young as nine and 11, using day trips, clothes, and food to lure them to his Highgate flat. He also targeted a third victim, kissing her when she was just six years old. King was found guilty of 15 child sex offences, including five counts of rape and ten counts of indecent assault. He was sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court in June, appearing via

In his sentencing remarks, Judge Roderick Henderson praised the victims as “three strong women whose lives were destroyed.” Highlighting the long-lasting trauma of sexual abuse, Judge Henderson said: “If ever a case illustrated the terrible effect sexual abuse has, this is it. As with so


many people who have been sexually abused, it is not resolved when it is finished. It continued for weeks, months and years later.” He added that such abuse “destroys their trust and confidence” and causes victims to wrongfully feel guilty “when none of it is their responsibility.” Defending King, Rebecca Fairbairn noted that he suffers from significant health issues but has taken a full-time job in custody, achieving ‘enhanced status.’ She acknowledged that King is fully aware he may spend the rest of his life behind bars.
