WISH Working Group project to support mobile plant operators

THE Health and Safety Executive (HSE) release annual statistics relating to health and safety at work covering ill health, injury and fatalities in the workplace. Non fatal injuries in the UK for the 2018/2019 reporting period were at a similar level to other large economies in 2013. UK rates of work- related ill health resulting in sick leave were lower than most other EU countries.

The good news is that the UK consistently has one of the lowest standardised rates of fatal injury across the EU, lower than other large economies and the EU average. However, there were still 147 fatal injuries to workers in 2018/19.

These statistics relate to all workplaces and it is clear that incidents with vehicles and machinery are major contributors to the fatality statistics. In the waste sector specifically there were seven fatal injuries in 2018/19. Initially, this does not look too bad – but when looking at the annual average rates for 2014/15-2018/19 (which gives a more stable picture by reducing the effect of year-on-year fluctuations): agriculture, forestry and fishing, and waste and recycling come out worst. They had a rate of injury some 18 times and 17 times as high as the average across all industries respectively.

About the Waste Industry Safety and Health (WISH) Forum With these statistics in mind, it is clear to see why WISH Forum was set up to identify, devise and promote activities to improve industry health and safety standards. The WISH Forum brings together representatives from HSE, main trade associations, professional associations, trade unions, recycling organisations and national and local government bodies involved in waste management and recycling.

The WISH has a number of active working groups, one of which is the WISH (Mobile Plant) People and Safe Performance
