Women (and men) wanted for the National Refuse Championships 2020
THE most popular event on the waste and recycling calendar, the National Refuse Championships, returns to Weston-super-Mare on Saturday 13 June 2020 and event organisers are calling for men and women who work in the waste and recycling sector to sign up.
Spencer Law, Founder of the NRC said: “We are looking for 32 teams this year, and we’d like to encourage more female teams to enter. It’s not just for collection crews and drivers; staff working in offices, sorting facilities, workshops or out in the field are welcome too.”
The event brings together employees from local authorities, vehicle and equipment manufacturers and private waste collection companies, to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society by racing up and down Weston-super-Mare beach lawns.
The gruelling races involve teams of five people - drivers, loaders, workshop and office staff – who race against the clock, testing their strength and stamina, loading wheelie bins with sandbags
before pushing or pulling them 50m to be emptied into an awaiting refuse vehicle.
The winning team will be presented with a trophy and £3,000-worth of Centre Parcs vouchers. First place runners will receive with £1,250 of Buy-A-Gift vouchers and second place runners up are given £1,000 of Buy-A-Gift vouchers.
The National Refuse Championships is a superb spectator event and provides a FREE, fun family day out with something for the whole family, with food stalls, fun fair rides, a Kids Zone and the races of course!

OWL Scotland returns for 2020
THE OWL (Optimised Waste & Logistics) Roadshow is back in Scotland with a thought-provoking programme that delivers practical solutions for the air quality crisis as well as new intel about electric RCVs in an interactive workshop.
The OWL Roadshow Scotland returns to Mar Hall and Spa in Bishopston outside Glasgow on 26 March, 2020.
This year, speakers will be tackling subjects that include road transport air pollution, managing commercial electric HGV fleets and the cost-benefits of eRCVs.
Jason Airey, MD of CMS SupaTrak, commented: “OWL Scotland will provide employers in the waste industry with powerful tools to protect their workers from toxic air pollution. The British Safety
Council states that employees in our sector are even more at risk because they are walking in the fumes of multiple vehicles all day. OWL Scotland will deliver practical solutions and advice for transport and fleet managers so they can fulfil their duty of care for their staff.”
Barry Sheerman, Labour MP for Huddersfield, and Chairman of the OWL Partnership will open the conference with a keynote talk that will address apprenticeships and urge everyone to join the fight for cleaner air.

Also new in this year's programme are case studies. For OWL Scotland, Fraser Crichton, Corporate Fleet Manager for Dundee City Council, will talk about how the city managed to go completely electric.
Further OWL Roadshows will take place across the UK and Ireland throughout 2020. Interested parties can find the dates and registration links on:
