How attitudes to mental health are shifting


The COVID-19 crisis placed unforeseen burdens on everyone, and it’s perhaps no surprise that the mental health of both business leaders and their families has been impacted. Premium health insurer Bupa Global found in its Executive Wellbeing Indexi


(78%) experienced poor mental health symptoms during the pandemic, and 68% have seen symptoms such as fatigue, anger, impatience or low mood in their family members too.


However, pervasive stigmas around mental health issues along with the pressures of family reputation have long been a burden to bear. Over a third of the UK’s business elite admit that speaking about mental health issues is still seen as a sign of weakness in their wider family, with many reporting that the pressure of living up to the expectations of their parents has damaged their mental health.


Shrugging off stigmas


Encouragingly though, the pandemic may have provided a watershed moment, over half of the UK’s business leaders saying they now think differently about mental health.


Indeed, business leaders say they’re realigning their priorities for their children - and mental health and wellbeing is now at the top of their list. Nearly a quarter of the UK’s high achieving parents say they won’t put pressure on their children to take the same paths as they did.

Going forward, it’s crucial that individuals break the cycle and open up – for themselves, their peers and future generations.

When it comes to supporting children, Dr Pablo Vandenabeele, Clinical Director for Mental Health at Bupa Global, talks about the need for open and ongoing dialogue.


“Though it may feel difficult at the time, children will benefit more from honest conversations in an understanding home environment.” he says. “It’s important for parents to listen and respond to any concerns without judgement. Run through the conversation in your head, or with a friend beforehand, to ensure you feel comfortable with the topics you are tackling and to help avoid them closing down.”
