cubicle with refillable toiletries, a toilet cubicle, and a sink in the main room with towels and a hairdryer. There are well-placed plug and
USB sockets, and a 50-inch Smart HDTV with streaming capabilities. However, it’s stingy that Moxy charges for bottled water when the tap is not drinkable. The room size didn’t bother me, but
the noise did. I tried to sleep amid the cacophony of corridor crawlers, the rail track outside and my neighbour’s loud TV. Staff readily provide earplugs – helpful, but a signal of the hubbub. Avoid higher floors due to roaring rooftop tunes.
Moxy Brooklyn Williamsburg
Marriott’s Moxy brand debuted in Brooklyn in March 2023, marking the brand’s sixth property in New York
What’s it like? Located in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg, the Moxy fits right into the home of hipsters with colourful murals and 20-foot-high ceilings that nod to the area’s affinity for warehouses. Interiors by BASILE Studio
Hospitality and Lightstone Design Studio are bold, with pointillist depictions of Williamsburg Bridge, a crossword-style graphic in the lift, and an arcade machine in the lobby. Guests get a sense of the vibe as
soon as they reach Bedford Avenue, with music played on the sidewalk. Once you enter, the volume goes up a notch. A glass-walled facade provides a glimpse of the energy inside, while a Pop Art mural by D*Face stretches the length of the southern facade – depicting a woman in traffic exclaiming “Get me to the Moxy”. Nearby are indie bars, vintage shops and Domino Park.
G O OD - T O - K NO W Head to the hotel’s nightclub, Jolene,
for DJ sets. Guests get priority access on Thursdays before 12am.
DECEMBER 2024/JANUARY 2025
Rooms Moxy is known for having small rooms. Here, 216 rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows range from 14-19 sqm, but the design maximises limited space – expect an open wardrobe, various pegs and hooks, plus a pull-out drawer beneath the bed housing a safe. A table folds down from the wall, although this only just fits a laptop and is not comfortable for working (Executive Rooms have a standalone desk). Everything is modular, which suits
some guests but irritates others. Also within the space is a walk-in shower
Facilities The F&B spaces are wonderful. Mesiba, meaning “party” in Hebrew, offers Levantine sharing plates in a sophisticated (and ironically quite calm)
space with plants. Then there’s Bar Bedford with a garden, and
rooftop bar LilliStar with a deck offering incredible skyline views. There are also three meeting
spaces, a co-working table and fitness centre.
V E R D I CT This playful hotel is designed for
social adventures and late nights, rather than sleep and work. You’ll spot a younger crowd here, who come for co-working, cocktails and dancing the night away at Jolene Sound Room.
