NAVIGATING the world of points can be confusing. In the US, credit cards and reward programmes mean people can collect miles much faster than those living in the UK. Here, every point really does count. With BA economy reward
flights starting from circa 5,000 points, it can feel like forever before you’ve collected enough – knowing the shortcuts is vital. This month, we’re putting the
weekly shop under the spotlight to showcase how you can quickly rack up extra points, without any extra effort.

Which frequent flyer programme? For oneworld, British Airways Avios can be collected through Sainsbury’s by connecting your Nectar and Avios accounts. For Skyteam, we recommend
collecting points for Virgin Atlantic’s Flying Club via the airline’s partnership with Tesco. Sadly, Star Alliance doesn’t
have any partnerships with retailers in the UK, but there are still opportunities to earn miles through online shopping portals.
British Airways Avios
By shopping at Sainsbury’s, the weekly shop would automatically give you 66 Avios, thanks to the conversion rate of 400
Nectar points to 250 Avios. However, by shopping smart with Nectar bonuses, such as dynamic offers in store, you can regularly achieve an additional 250-400 Nectar points each week. If you use a British
Airways American Express
Platinum Card you could also get an additional 1.5 Avios per pound spent, which would boost your weekly earning potential by 159 Avios.
Our top tip would be to use
the Nectar Amex card, which provides 3x Nectar points at Sainsbury’s. This translates to an additional 318 Nectar points, giving you 198 Avios.

By comparison, the same
shop at Tesco would give you 213 Virgin Red points, thanks to the conversion rate of 250 Clubcard points to 500 Virgin Red points. Unlike Nectar,
Tesco doesn’t really offer any bonus points to boost your balance. The Tesco Clubcard Credit Card will give you 5 points per £4 spent, but our recommendation is the American Express Platinum card, which gives one point per pound, but has so many added travel advantages.
