Dom Gilroy, Library and Knowledge Services Manager, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust
As a ready-made catalogue of the knowledge and skills required for the profession, the PKSB became an obvious choice for use in a staff skills audit.

CILIP’s Professional Knowledge and Skills Base (PKSB) not only provides individuals with a valuable professional development tool, it can also help organisations deliver targeted development opportunities. Here Dom Gilroy, looks at how one NHS Trust’s library and knowledge service is using the PKSB to successfully deliver its strategic goals.
LEEDS Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is one of the largest and busiest acute hospi- tal trusts in the country. Around 1.5 million patients are treated every year and while many of these are Leeds residents, the trust also provides a range of specialist healthcare services for people across Yorkshire and the Humber and nationally.
As library and knowledge service manager my role is to lead the small library team in providing a pro- active library service to healthcare staff and learners on placement within the organisation through a range of physical and online offers. The library and knowledge services team consists of
five professionally qualified librarians and two admin- istrative staff. In common with most NHS libraries, we offer a range of services including physical library and learning spaces with curated collections of print materials; information skills, critical appraisal and health literacy training; evidence search services including support for systematic reviews; current awareness services; enquiry and reference services and more.
Strategic decisions
Our library strategy takes the form of a “Plan on a page” and we focus on six main goals for the service.

In summary these are: to develop and improve our library spaces; to enhance our services by working in partnership; to save the time of our healthcare colleagues through the services we offer; to demon- strate improvements and impact in our services; to support other teams in the Trust delivering learning; and to expand our role into knowledge management and mobilisation.
These aims and goals have been inspired by discussions with stakeholders within the organisa- tion and influenced by the organisation’s Learning Education and Training Strategy which the library service is included within. It also responds to pri- orities expressed in NHS England’s national library strategy Knowledge for Healthcare. The plan on a page includes a series of broad actions through which our strategic goals will be achieved. Each year the library team holds a “time-out” to agree specific actions and key perfor- mance indicators for the year ahead. These are then reported biannually to stakeholders in the Medical Education Rounding group and through our Annual Report.
Using the PKSB CILIP’s PKSB outlines the broad spectrum of knowl- edge and skills required across the profession. As a
