Green Libraries Week My Green Libraries Week
As Green Libraries Week hits its third year we hear from some of the people who have been involved along the way. Whether designing and curating activities in library settings or attending a previous Libraries Conference.
Laragh Quinney
I’M Programme Lead for the National Library of Scotland’s Climate Action Plan and a member of the library’s Green Team. I help to co-ordinate and promote sustain- able action across the library. For Green Libraries Week 2024 the
Library’s Green Team hosted a Nature Craft Event for families. This was a drop-in event on a Saturday morning. The event aimed to engage local families with the natural world and allow attendees to create practical items they could place in their gardens to support local wildlife. Activities were chosen to appeal to a range of ages. These included:
l Create bug hotels from bamboo;
l make bird feeders from pinecones, fat and seeds;
l nature themed stained-glass style colouring sheets;
l autumnal wreaths;
l watch a video of birds at a feeding station.
On the day over 70 people attended the craft session, with most taking part in two or more activities. It was great to see families leaving with both bug hotels and bird feeders to place in their gardens and some stunning art works to display. The stained-glass style colouring sheets proved so popular that we ran out.
Creating the pinecone bird feeders was wonderful messy fun. We did have rolls of paper to wipe hands with but if possible we’d recommend running this activity close to hand washing facilities! And you should expect to sweep up lots of seeds at the end of the day.
Feedback from participants was very positive and we had many requests to run similar sessions in the future. Other family craft events themed around nature and the environment have since taken place.

Graham Whatley
Leicester Libraries has been taking part in CILIP’s Green Libraries Week since it’s inception three years ago, and Graham Whatley has been involved in organising events.
I HAVE been responsible for plan- ning and co-ordinating Green/ Libraries Week in Leicester since 2022, so this year will be my fourth. For Green Libraries Week we are again offering an exciting and diverse range of events and activities across all our sites. And they’re all free! We have partnered with Leicester Adult Education again, who last year delivered a host of taster sessions, including watercolour painting, online safety, weaving, crochet, ESOL and various crafts involving recycled items.

Engagement opportunities After COVID, I was tasked with getting people back through our doors with a com- bination of attractive and interesting stock and events. Libraries Week (as it was then) was a great opportunity to showcase and celebrate what we had to offer, and it was lovely to be part of a national promotion aimed at adults. Our service objectives are to engage already active library members, entice lapsed library members back and to encourage new membership, th us
