Rewired returns: join the tech curious at this year’s digital conference
CILIP’s digital and innovation conference is returning to London’s CodeNode for another packed programme of hands-on opportunities, talks and insights. Rewired is your chance to find out about the latest developments in library, information and knowledge management tech, meet the suppliers and more.
DIGITAL transformation continues at pace across all sectors of the profession and Rewired is a perfect oppor- tunity for tech-curious librarians, information manag- ers and knowledge managers to learn more about what’s new. The conference, which launched last year, delivers a new perspective on the intersection between the pro- fession and the digital tools that are helping shape the way we work now and into the future. CILIP Events Manager Louise Greener says this year’s Rewired will build on the foundations laid in the inaugural event, helping to set a clear and practical path for practitioners to adopt technology and make it work for their services. She says: “From the conversa- tions we’ve had with sector colleagues, there’s a sense that we’ve theorised around AI quite a bit in the past twelve months, and now there’s a thirst to see ‘ok, where do we go from here? How and where is it actually being successfully implemented on-the- ground in sector settings? And what can we learn from that?’” With this in mind, the programme will address AI and metadata, exploring the opportunities for automation and the benefits that they can bring to a service. Allied to this topic, will be a closer look at the ethical implications and what can be done to ensure technology is equitable for all.
There will also be an opportunity to explore case studies of successful implementation of AI tools across sectors. These case studies will give delegates in insight into how their own services could adapt and adopt successful strategies. Louise adds that the programme will also provide an update on the regulatory landscape of emerging technologies in the context of a new Labour government, and what these insights might mean for the sector.
The Good Things Foundation will be at Rewired, exploring digital inequalities, social mobility, and how the profession can support our communities to meet the Minimum Digital Living Standard. Louise adds that this year’s Rewired will once again feature plenty of opportunities to gets hands-on with tech and speak to suppliers. Louise says: “We were completely blown away by the response to last year’s event. What we saw at Rewired 2023 was a convening of a real tech-curious community and the showcasing of some really creative digital applications within the sector. “From Minecraft virtual worlds, VR experiences and AI-pow- ered image search, there was a ton to see, and we’ve been working really hard to bring even more creative and innovative applications to the table for 2024.”
This year’s Rewired will see out-of-the-box thinking about how tech 42 INFORMATION PROFESSIONAL
can be used to attract new users through the library doors. The team from Camden Libraries (who last year ran the event’s VR Lab) are returning to showcase a Lego Robotics feature, a commun ity digital engagement programme they’ve been successfully running in the past year. With sessions running throughout the day, this feature allows delegates hands-on time with playful and crea- tive tech. Iqbal Hussain, Camden Libraries Community Library Manager, says: “Lego Robotics blends Lego building with simple programming, letting you create and control your own robots. It’s a fun way to learn about technology, coding, and engineering.” The event will also feature a partnership with FabLab Devon – the
UK’s first fabrication lab based in a public library and celebrating their ten-year anniversary this year. Marcus Brown, Digital Mak- ing Tutor at Exeter Library will be bringing some of the FabLab kit for delegates to try out and see in action (announcements coming soon, stay tuned for updates).
Digital Solutions
Central to the event is the Digital Solutions Lab – a space which welcomes a number of the leading solutions providers to show- case their platforms and services. The lab features 15-minute demo huddles, informal chats and the opportunity to receive expert advice from the suppliers leading the digital transformation of our sector. Last year’s lab showcased open-source software, integrated library management systems, digital asset management, website creation and a number of AI-powered platforms such as image search engines, research support and article summarisers, and this year’s feature is set to be even bigger and better.
Specialist tech venue
The conference takes place at specialist tech venue CodeNode, home to hackathons, tech community meet-ups and some of the UK’s leading tech conferences. CodeNode sits at the beating heart of London’s tech district – close to Silicone Roundabout – and enjoys super-charged wifi capability with the ability to connect up to 600 devices seamlessly.
