CILIP LEADERSHIP

Leadership roles on Board of Trustees and Presidential Team

CILIP is looking for new trustees to join the Board and help to shape policy and direction for the organ- isation and its members. The role of the Board is crucial to CILIP’s success, and with three places due to become vacant in 2025 there are opportunities for members to take an active role in leading CILIP on the next phase of its journey with new CEO Louis Coffait-Gunn. There is also a position in CILIP’s Presi- dential Team, in the role of Vice President – followed by a term as CILIP President. Each of the vacancies are open to CILIP members and could require an election, depending on how many people are nom- inated.

CILIP Elections 2024 CILIP is pleased to announce the call- for-nominations for candidates wishing to stand for election as either Vice Presi- dent or a Trustee of the CILIP Board from January 2025, or for co-option as the standing ‘New Professional’ Trustee on the Board. Candidates are invited to self-nom- inate using the forms available on the CILIP website. As part of the commitments set out in our Changing Lives Position Statement, we are particularly keen to attract global majority candidates or other people from under-represented communi- ties in our profession.

About the role: Vice President CILIP has had a President since our establishment under Royal Charter in 1898. Past Presidents have included the Duke of Edinburgh, the Archbishop of Canterbury, captains of industry, inven- tors, Members of Parliament, and leading library and information professionals. More recently, CILIP Presidents have been CILIP members with the ability to champion CILIP and the sector.

The Vice-President is elected by the membership for a single year, at the end of which they automatically become CILIP President for a year. The responsibilities of the role include deputising for the Presi- dent at key external and sector events. The President acts as a spokesperson for CILIP and is asked to select one of CILIP’s four strategic priorities as the ‘theme’ for their year. They are also expected to com- municate regularly with the Vice-Presi- dent and help them prepare for their own Presidential year. Current President Sue Williamson MBE says: “Why did I run for President? Well, it’s a huge honour to hold that role in your professional organisation. Being VP and then President enables you to use your voice in support of our amazing profession. “Specifically, I’ve loved seeing CILIP develop a prominent role in thought leadership and continual advocacy, nation- ally and internationally. Work on CPD, AI, ethics and values, Green Libraries, Managing Safe and Inclusive Library Services and on Come Rain or Shine, helping library lead- ers shape their future services, has been so exciting to be part of. “On a personal note, I credit CILIP with enabling my entire career. Without CILIP, it would have been very difficult for me to apply for some of the fantastic roles I have enjoyed. Accreditation allowed me to go on to Charter and I’m proud to have been in the first cohort and to call myself a librarian. I wanted to give something back.”

About the role: Trustee Trustees are members of CILIP’s Board, which is responsible for the overall gov- ernance, strategic direction and leader- ship of the Charity. Trustees are expect- ed to attend four meetings a year plus one induction day and may also choose to join CILIP’s Board sub-committees.

About the role: New Professional

Trustee The CILIP Board includes one stand- ing vacancy for a ‘New Professional’ Trustee to represent the growing new professional community in our mem- bership. The New Professional Trustee is co-opted to the Board for a period of two years, and enjoys full voting rights on the Board during that period. Corin Peacock joined the board in Jan- uary 2024 and they would recommend it to anyone looking to gain more expe- rience and learn new skills. They said: “Serving as a CILIP Trustee enables me to contribute to an organisation that champions libraries, information pro- fessionals, and knowledge management. It’s a meaningful role where I can influ- ence strategic decisions and help shape the future of the profession. While it has required a steep learning curve, particu- larly as someone without prior experience, it has been both personally rewarding and professionally fulfilling.
