Hip Hop’s 50th anniversary
LIBRARIES across the US have launched “Collections of Culture: 50 Years of Hip-Hop Inside Libraries, Museums and Archives” with a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The celebrations, led by the Queens Public Library (QPL) New York City have included a day-long symposium on Hip- Hop fashion at the Museum of Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City and a conversation about the history of hip-hop with Public Enemy’s Chuck D at QPL’s Central Library.
Future events will look at its relation- ship with mental health and its impact on global culture.
Global societal collapse?
PAUL Singer, the founder of Elliott Management, the $56bn hedge fund that owns Waterstone’s, Foyles, Blackwells in the UK and Barnes & Nobel in the US, has delivered a forecast to his investors that, according to commentators, reach whole new levels of bleakness.
In his message he says the world is “on a path to hyperinflation” and “global societal collapse” with potential to exceed any crisis since the Second World War, and the FT asks: “With a record of only two negative years since launch in 1977, would you bet against Singer being right?”.

CILIP is looking for aspiring and emerging leaders to give five-minute talks to delegates at Conference 2023 in Birmingham. Selected speakers will give lightning talks
that fit into Conference 2023’s over-arch- ing leadership theme. The two-day event at the Hilton Bir- mingham Metropole on 12 and 13 July, will focus on topics such as organisa- tional resilience, digital leadership and leading inclusive services. The programme also includes ses-

New Voices, Big Ideas are asked to consider ‘Leadership for changing times’ with a view to answering the question “what does modern leadership look like?” CILIP Conference programmers are inviting submissions from the sector’s aspiring and emerging leaders to explore the challenges and opportunities ahead and how they need to be tackled. This could be a look at hybrid working,
rapid digital advances, cost-of-living crisis, global climate crisis, increasing hostility to
already-marginalised groups, or anything else the sector needs to think about – pre- sented in a leadership context. For example, how could leadership adapt
to support change and foster both individ- ual and organisational resilience? Or how can good leaders develop their empathy and support for their colleagues? Submissions can either be a written proposal or video submission via https://bit. ly/3kYy9Uz. Entries close midnight 2 May and entrants who are chosen to speak will receive a free delegate place for the day.
