Funding helps Seven Stories widen access
SEVEN Stories, the National Centre for Children’s Books, has been named as one of Arts Council England’s National Portfolio Organisations. The news means the Newcastle-based organisation will be funded by the Arts Council for the next three years. Seven Stories is a museum and collection of the best in children’s stories and publishing, and includes a visitor centre in Ouseburn area of Newcastle upon Tyne. Arts Council Chief Executive, Darren Henley, says National Portfolio Organi- sation funding provides opportunities for people to enjoy art and culture, despite diffi cult times. He said: “We are in tough times but we must remember creativity brings with it extraordinary dividends, boosting our country’s economic growth, creating jobs, bringing communities closer together, and making us happier as indi- viduals. Everyone deserves to enjoy the benefi ts it brings, and with this invest- ment, we believe we’ve taken a decisive

step towards making that vision a reality.” The guaranteed funding allows Seven Stories to plan and implement a number of key objectives for the charity, including the ‘All Aboard Programme’ to improve access to the Arts across the country. Seven Stories recently announced a free-entry model, as part of its aims to widen access. Wendy Elliott, Seven Stories Chief execu-
tive, said: “We’re thrilled with Arts Council England’s continued support and thank
the team there, and at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport also. The funding highlights their confi dence in our new business model and will allow us to reach new areas of the North East, and the rest of the UK, including those fac- ing the biggest challenges both culturally and economically. Supporting children’s literacy, oracy and creative development in these uncertain times has never been more important. “This funding will support us to keep
the Visitor Centre as a free entry space all year round and we’d love to see as many people enjoying our spaces as possible including our specialist children’s book- shop, coff ee shop and seven fl oors of galleries and event spaces. We will have extended opening hours in the winter and a packed schedule of events for all ages.” A digital exhibition space is online at
