ONNECTIONS and networks can be valuable tools for anyone working in the information

professional, and there are lots of ways to start building them. The latest issue of the PostLib is on the theme of building connections and is well worth a read. To be first to get your copy of PostLib and to make sure you miss none of the news from CILIP RPG you can join the mailing list. As a CILIP member you can join any, or all, of the regional networks, devolved nations or special interest groups (including RPG) free of charge. See the list of CILIP groups that you can join at www.cilip.org.uk/ membernetworkcontacts

CILIP’s RPG has a couple of events that are all about making connections – including the annual CILIP lunch and the CILIP Residential Weekend in North Wales. More information is available from Ian Orton, CILIP RPG Chair. Ian is keen to get your feedback and answer any questions from across CILIP and beyond. You can contact him via email at: chair.rpg@cilip.org.uk or you can call him on 07841 577991.

International connections The CILIP RPG Committee has been reviewing the benefits of involvement with IFLA (International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions), the leading international body representing the interests of people who rely on libraries and information professionals.

The highlights of my librarianship career would not be complete without mentioning my membership of IFLA (www.ifla.org). IFLA’s World Library and Information Conference is one of the best ways to develop your library career and stay connected with like- minded colleagues. There are many groups to choose from, depending on one’s aspirations and areas of specialisation.

IFLA gives one the opportunity to discover the diversity of cultures and the uniqueness of people in their natural environments. Every conference helps in building up one’s

knowledge and information about the world, and the people we share it with. Host countries go to a great length in showcasing the best about their culture, food and talents. My love for libraries and travel has increased enormously since I joined IFLA 14 years ago. Whether on a holiday or conference, one of my visiting targets for a country is a public library. The richness of a country’s library and information service speaks volumes about its values and appreciation of human development. Ayub Kahn, CILIP Past President and Service Manager Universal Services, Warwickshire County Council, is a great ambassador for the work of IFLA and became more involved with IFLA when elected President of CILIP. The International theme was his main focus as President and he was keen to develop links between CILIP and IFLA. He has been on the IFLA Governing Board since 2021. Ayub says: “The first IFLA congress I attended was in Jerusalem in 2000, and I have attended many since. It’s a great opportunity for making international connections and personal development and learning. The IFLA Congress 2023 is in Rotterdam and easy to get on Eurostar: a great opportunity for us to strengthen links and I encourage CILIP members to go!” There are a number of CILIP bursaries on offer to help people attend the IFLA Conference in Rotterdam 2023 https://2023.ifla.org.

l The Knowledge & Information Management group is offering a bursary for the IFLA Conference covering the whole cost of the conference fee (early-bird rate) and £300 towards travel and accommodation in Rotterdam. Contact secretary.KandIM@cilip.org.uk
