Community focus to forge stronger relationships

Pre-pandemic, CILIP began work on a community strategy designed to strengthen the relationship between CILIP, its community groups and the membership. The strategy was forced onto the back burner by Covid, but was not forgotten. Here Paul Caton, CILIP’s Community Relationship Manager, looks at the progress made in recent months, and what it means for the strategy as it moves forward alongside the We Are CILIP action plan.

WAY back in the mists of time (around 2019) we started development on a CILIP Community Strategy. We con- sulted widely, seeking the aspirations and expectations of CILIP’s 30+ communities and they told us how we could provide more value to you; by strengthening community voices, improving technology, updating com- munity models, streamlining reporting requirements and improving how we cooperate, communicate, and use data. So, we created a community strategy but like all the best laid plans, they went astray. The world delivered some seismic shifts, some radical changes to the way we work, communicate, deliver community engage- ment and pretty much everything else. As we emerged from the tumult we took stock again, and although these key issues were still relevant, we knew we needed to change our approach to meet the new reality we’re working towards – a connected, supported, engaged community of members. Last year the We are CILIP action plan and fi ve-year strategy was released, providing a blueprint for CILIP’s work, purpose and mission through to 2027. At the same time, we have been looking at how we work with our communities to support this mission. We started by establishing a Community Strategy Task and Finish Group (CSTAF).

Paul Caton (paul.caton@cilip.org.uk), Relationship Manager, CILIP Member Networks.

This group had some amazing represent- atives from our Special Interest Groups and Regional Networks who kindly went above and beyond their usual commitments to CILIP’s communities. It also had representatives not currently serving on a community committee with some special expertise, for example we seconded a ‘new-professionals rep’ from our friends in CILIP Scotland to provide some much needed expertise in this area. I’d also be remiss if I didn’t thank our fantastic independent Chair, Jo Wood, who’s leadership allowed us to make strong progress.
