IN DEPTH Yoto Carnegies – shortlisted books

THE shortlists for this year’s Yoto Carnegies have been revealed, as the countdown begins to find out who will be named 2023’s winners. The Yoto Carnegies celebrate the best writing and illustration in children’s books published in the UK over the last 12 months. The Awards are the UK’s oldest and most prestigious for chil- dren’s books, and are unique in that they are judged by librarians. The awards

also provide a unique opportunity for thousands of children to review and rate books in the same way as judges and vote for their favourite through the Shadow- ers’ Choice Awards for each category. This year’s shortlist for the Yoto Carnegie writers’ medal is made up of a number of previous shortlisted authors – including past winners Katya Balen, (October, October in 2022) and Ruta Sepetys (Salt to the Sea in 2017). The

Yoto Carnegie Medal shortlist

Katya Balen for The Light in Everything (Bloomsbury’s Children’s Books). The Light in Everything tells the story of Tom and Zofia, who are reluctantly brought together in the same house (and family) when Tom’s mum and Zofia’s dad fall in love. The children resent each other, but not as much as they resent the imminent arrival of a new baby. A story of learning to trust, trying to let go and diving into the unknown.

Sita Brahmachari for When Shadows Fall (illustrated by Natalie Sirett, and published by Little Tiger). Kai, Orla and Zak grew up together and they have big plans for the future – until Kai’s family suffers a huge loss. Trying to cope with his own grief, as well as watching it tear his family apart, Kai is drawn into a new and more dangerous crowd, until his dreams for the future are a distant memory.

Jessie Burton for Medusa (illustrated by Olivia Lomenech Gill and published by Bloomsbury). A re-telling of the Greek Myth, sees Jessie Burton flip the familiar story of Medusa, who has been abused and banished by the Gods. When Perseus arrives on her island, Medusa’s lonely existence is blown apart.

Louise Finch for The Eternal Return of Clara Hart (Little Island). The story
