We are fortunate to have some amazing talent working in libraries, information and knowledge management services – but we still face issues about how that talent is recognised and rewarded. Although it is a female-dominated profession, the representation at a leadership level does not reflect that. It is not unique to our profession, but that doesn’t mean it should be glossed over and we should all be working to change things for the better. Amina Shah, National Librarian and Chief Executive for the National Library of Scotland, calls for more to be done to recognise different leadership styles – with an emphasis on empathy, listen- ing and empowering others. She points out that leadership does not begin with title, and rather than being a destination, leadership is a journey that can start at any time in your career. Read more on page 20.

W Jennie Rose Halperin from the US advocacy campaign Future

Libraries talks about her own role in fighting unfair pricing and licensing practices. She looks to campaigners on these shores, like Johanna Anderson who are demonstrating their own personal leadership on issues that matter to them (pp. 28-30). Kirsty Lingstadt has demonstrated how it is possible to lead an organisation through change, developing new ways of working to meet new demands. She is particularly interested in how physical and digital resources compliment each other and open new oppor- tunities for users. Find her interview on page 40. CILIP Scotland’s Kirsten MacQuarrie has helped shine a light on feminism in libraries, through a series of talks under the banner of WINspiration. The online events have included a range of speakers, including Amina Shah and Dr Adele Patrick. If you have missed any of them, they are well worth looking up – find out about some of the sessions and where to find them on page 24. There are two conference opportunities on the horizon, with the CILIP/Naomi Korn Copyright Conference first up. Taking place in May, you can hear from Naomi and keynote speaker Dr Smita Kheria on page 36. Professor Louise Cooke will be joining delegates at CILIP Conference in July, where she will be discussing how libraries manage controversial materials, see page 16. There is plenty to inspire in this issue, and we hope you enjoy finding out more about all of our contributors.
