Marie Ann Davis-Howes

arie Ann Davis-Howes loved books and libraries intensely from a very early age and had worked in Nottinghamshire County Libraries (Inspire) for nearly twenty years.

After joining Arnold Library as a part-time Library Assistant Marie worked extremely hard within the profes- sion and through many years of study became a Chartered Librar- ian (MCLIP). She also attained ACLIP and PMICS qualifications while with the County Library Service.

Marie became a Library Events Officer in 2010 and developed a wide range of innovative cultural and family events and exhibitions

throughout Nottinghamshire Libraries. She co-ordinated Jazz in Libraries with Jazz-Steps, developed Summer Safety Roadshows, and introduced ‘OXJAM’ and Folk among the Fiction to Beeston Library following its major refurbish-

Carl Earl C

arl Earl passed away suddenly, yet peacefully, in his sleep last summer on 30 July. Carl was born in Whiston Hospital, near Liverpool in 1942. He attended the Liverpool Institute High School for Boys before leaving to begin his long and successful

career in the Library Service at the tender age of 17. His first role was as a Library Assistant with the Liverpool libraries. It was during this role that he met Shelagh, whom he would marry in Knotty Ash in 1964 in the pouring rain. In 1963 Carl moved to Dorset to work as the ‘token Scouser’ at Dorchester Library, this would be his first stint with Dorset Libraries. Carl’s next move was to work with the Kent Libraries in 1967. He began life in Kent as a Chief Cataloguer before moving up to Assistant

County Librarian and finally, Deputy County Librarian. In 1980, Carl was Vice Chairman of the London and Home Counties Branch of the former Library Association (now CILIP), before becoming Chairman in the following year. During their time together Mark Lunt and Carl both represented the Branch at the annual world conference of the International Federation of

Library Associations. Carl’s service on the Branch Committee and its sub-committees over the years was characterised by his thoughtful, wise and valuable contribution to their decisions. Carl returned to Dorset in 1984 to take up the post of County Librarian and Arts Officer. He would remain in this role until taking early retirement in 1997, when the county was restruc- tured. During his time in this role he established a partnership with the Pomeranian Library of Szczecin, Poland, in the early 1990s. He was even awarded the highest decoration from Pomerania, the Gryf Pomorski, for his work strengthening cooperation and friendship between the two regions. From 1997 he operated as an independent library and information consultant on a wide range of projects in both the public library and other sectors of the information field. Carl was married to Shelagh, until she sadly passed away in 2000. They had three children, Gillian, Caroline and Richard. In 2005 Carl began the last, wonderful act of his life when he married Liz and they settled in Somerset together. Carl con- tinued to enjoy rambling with several local groups, travelling and gardening with Liz, reading voraciously and being a won- derful father and grandfather. Carl remained interested and interesting and, though he is sorely missed, he will be fondly remembered.

Richard Earl (son).

ment. She worked on the development of programmes and events at all of Inspire’s Strategic Libraries beginning with Worksop where her contribution greatly boosted the footfall through her innovative and energetic marketing skills. She also loved to organise and staff the library service stands at Nottingham Pride and the Nottinghamshire County Show where her bright bubbly personality shone through. Most recently Marie had worked as a Development Officer within Reading and programmes.

For six years, whilst working for Inspire, Marie spent most of her weekends and spare time studying for a BA Open Degree (Arts & Humanities) graduating with honours at Birmingham in 2017. Her strongest subject was Children’s Literature for which she gained distinctions in every assign- ment. She also gained further professional qualifications in Marketing and Project Management.

Marie was a dedicated and extremely creative library professional. She inspired those around her and was a great leader and motivator.

Brian Howes (husband)
