Census 2021 lessons Censuses in the UK provide government with the information required to target resources and services effectively. The census is for statistical purposes only. Demographic information collected includes age, gender and family relationships. Socio economic data includes main job, educational qualifications, size of home, ethno-cultural background, health plus some voluntary questions on religion, sexual orientation and gender identity. The initial findings will be released March 2022, with final data available in March 2023. See more at https://census.gov.uk. The increased use of technology may mean that the 2021 census, at a cost of nudging £1bn, is not the last one. The information needed to plan for the future is increasingly collected electronically. The information workforce is increasingly identified with a broader range of roles embedded into organisations and communities.

AVE you ever wondered how all this talk of data and knowledge management impacts

on your own situation at work and at home? RPG members have been looking at ideas for keeping our own knowledge live and useful.

Personal Knowledge Management The CILIP knowledge cafe (16 Septem- ber and repeated 17 September) will be drawing in experts from across CILIP and from IFLA and beyond. We will be looking at the following topics:

Sir Ian Diamond, the UK’s National Statistician, is exploring alternative data sources such as the Ordnance Survey, GP registrations, council tax records and driving licences, supplemented by ad hoc surveys.

Workforce data mapping The 2015 comprehensive cross-sector mapping of the UK Information Workforce highlighted a number of key challenges and opportunities:

l UK workforce size estimated at 86,376 people – but only around 10 per cent in CILIP membership (compared to an average of 14-22 per cent membership of a professional association in other professions);

l A significant gender pay gap; l An ageing workforce.

While traditional roles will continue to exist in the future, the information workforce is increasingly identified with a broader range of roles embedded into organisations and communities.

The CILIP knowledge cafe on “Reimagining Work” April 2021 highlighted the fact that skillsets required of information professionals are changing and developing all the time in response to the changing needs of information users, changing formats and the changing contexts in which information, knowledge and data are used. See more at www.cilip.org.uk/ workforcemapping.

Improve workforce visibility The UK Government Knowledge & Information Profession (GKIMP) support qualified civil servants who enable the creation, organisation and exploitation of information and knowledge.

GKIMP has mapped the roles that are core to the information workforce, additional roles and allied professions. See more on GKIMP at: https://tinyurl. com/GKIMP.

A better awareness of the range

of roles across the information workforce and the skills required will help those moving up, changing career, or rejoining the profession. The GKIMP role mapping could be extended to include other sectors such as Health (clinical librarians), Legal (professional support lawyers) and Pharma (competitive intelligence). See CILIP Careers Hub www.cilip.org. uk/careershub for resources, support and guidance to help you, whether you’re actively looking for a new role or need help developing your current role.
