Skills and knowledge to meet the needs of the Fourth Industrial Revolution

A NEW research report from CILIP looks at the potential impact of Artificial Intelligence on the world of information and knowledge and how to take advantage of the opportunities the technology will bring. Report Author Dr Andrew Cox talks to Rob Green about skills, ethics and why the profession needs to engage with AI now.

CILIP’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) Report, The impact of AI, machine learning, automation and robot- ics, on the information professions, was released at the end of May. The comprehensive report looks at how AI is and could be used, what skills are needed to make the most of its potential, and also how we can ensure it is used ethically.

The report, written by Dr Andrew Cox, Senior Lecturer at The University of Shef- field’s Information School, was commis- sioned jointly by CILIP and Health Educa- tion England. It highlights the profession’s current strengths and vulnerabilities in relation to AI, robots, machine learning and their potential applications.

AI and the accompanying technologies have the power to transform how we live and work, as the recent Government White Paper, Regulation for the Fourth Indus- trial Revolution, suggests: “The Fourth Industrial Revolution is of a scale, speed and complexity that is unprecedented. It is characterised by a fusion of technologies – such as artificial intelligence, gene editing and advanced robotics – that is blurring the lines between the physical, digital and bio- logical worlds. It will disrupt nearly every industry in every country, creating new

opportunities and challenges for people, places and businesses to which we must respond.”

The research in Andrew’s report for CILIP will be used to shape the skills base for the profession, helping those working in information and knowledge sectors to take advantage of the opportunities and manage the challenges. The report states: “The primary function of the outputs of the research will be to drive the refresh of CILIP’s Professional Knowledge and Skills Base, and from this the ‘ecosystem’ of teaching, learning and professional develop- ment for current and future information,
