Laptop lending scheme a success

THE UK’s first dedicated laptop library for children from disadvantaged backgrounds has been hailed a success.

Based in Lewsiham, south east London, the scheme has seen more than 1,000 families take advantage of the free loans of laptops, which come with an internet dongle to help young people get online. Provided by community charity CC Foun- dation and supported by IT firm Total- ity Services, the hope is that the laptop library could be extended to deliver even more laptops families.

Lockdown schooling highlighted inequality of access to the internet and computers, with an estimated 1.8 million families not able to get online.

Time to start planning for Libraries Week 2021

ANYONE looking to take part in this year’s Libraries Week can start planning now, with more details and campaign tools released by CILIP.

Libraries Week 2021 takes place between 4 and 10 October, and provides a platform for a week of celebrations to recognise the contribution of librar- ies from all sectors. This year’s focus will be a showcase of how libraries are supporting local recovery, delivering services to meet the diverse needs of their community and helping to combat loneliness and improve wellbeing. With just over three months until this year’s celebration, now is the time to start planning events and promotion. With that in mind, CILIP has created a suite of campaign materials for librar- ies to use – including four eye-catch- ing posters, social media graphics and templates that can be easily adapted to promote events. CILIP Chief Executive Nick Poole is urging as many libraries as possible to get involved, saying that it is an oppor- tunity to show the world how libraries have been a vital part of life for many people over the last 18 months. He said:

“Libraries are uniquely placed, in the heart of our communities, to support not only economic recovery but help- ing to build stronger and more resilient communities. If we are going to ‘Build Back Better’ from the pandemic and the difficulties faced in the last 18 months, we should be celebrating our libraries as the real foundations of a prosperous and inclusive future society. “We know that a modern library ser- vice can provide a real ‘beating heart’ for communities through the range of inclusive social and cultural activities they offer. Libraries are already playing a vital role in the pandemic recovery through engaging and connecting indi- viduals, combatting loneliness, support- ing jobseekers and helping children and young people re-engage with learning. This Libraries Week I am thrilled to be celebrating the transformative power of libraries and librarians and the active difference that they make for their users and communities.” Libraries Week 2021 is sponsored by Nielsen Books and Bolinda UK Ltd. For more information on this year’s Librar- ies Week and to access all the campaign materials for free, visit www.librariesweek. org.uk.
